What makes some academic writing difficult to read? How can we help academic writers improve the clarity and flow of their writing? And how does a writer’s ‘process’ influence the end result?
In this practical and interactive workshop we’ll explore ways to give writers kind and constructive feedback. Giving feedback to others can also help us understand how our own writing will be received by readers. This workshop is therefore aimed at academics who would like to give more effective feedback to their peers or students, as well as those who wish to reflect on their own writing and revision process.
During the workshop we’ll discuss a student example (provided beforehand). At the end of the workshop there will also be an (optional) opportunity to share your contact information with one or two of your peers in order to schedule a time to practise giving each other feedback on your own writing.
By the end of the workshop, you should be better able to:
Identify common flaws in your own and others’ academic writing.
Give other writers kinder and more constructive feedback.
Understand how a writer’s process can result in opaque or disorganised writing – and learn how to remedy this.

Dr Heather Dyer, Royal Literary Fund Consultant Fellow, UK
Dr Heather Dyer is a Royal Literary Fund Consultant Fellow, author and academic writing coach who facilitates workshops and residential writing retreats for doctoral researchers. She has given verbal and written feedback to hundreds of researchers, helping them explain their work with clarity and confidence. Heather is also an award-winning children's author. Her doctorate explores the psychology of creativity and the working habits that maximise opportunities for creative insight.
