Chao Buzhi 1053-1110 Chao, from Juye county (in present day Shandong province), gained the jinshi degree in 1079 and held various minor official posts. As a friend and protégé of Su Shi, Chao gained some fame for his literary works. However, because of his association with Su and the factional disputes at court, he was demoted several times. Aloof and introvert by nature, Chao expressed himself through his poetry describing his feelings about life and its contradictions. Chao Buzhi left behind poems and essays collected in Jilei ji and Qin qu waipian.          close
