Chen Baichen (Ch'en Pai-ch'en) 1908-1994

Born in Jiangsu. His literary career began in the 1920s with the publication of his first novel, Xuanwo [Vortex], but in the late 1930s and 1940s he became well-known as a leading dramatist. His plays from the period of the War of Resistance against Japan, mostly political satires, won him wide recognition and, post-1949, a succession of posts in the cultural bureaucracy.
