Chen Ruoxi (Ch'en Jo-hsi, Chen Jo-hsi) 1938-

Born in Taiwan and graduated from National Taiwan University, where she and a group of other young writers (including Bai Xianyong) founded the bi-monthly Modern Literature. After graduation she gained an MA in the United States, having studied at Mount Holyoke College and Johns Hopkins University. In 1966 she and her husband went to Nanjing and lived there for seven years during the Cultural Revolution. Her subsequent collection of stories, The Execution of Mayor Yin (1978) won her instant international recognition. On leaving China, she stayed in Hong Kong for a year before emigrating to Canada and then the United States.
