Lu Xun (Lu Hsun) 魯迅 [pen name of Zhou Shuren 周樹人] 1881-1936
Lu Xun, a leading figure in the May Fourth Movement and the New Culture Movement, is probably the most influential writer, critic, translator and essayist in modern Chinese literature. Deeply distressed by the social disasters and the numbness of his fellow countrymen in the early 1900s, Lu Xun abandoned his medical studies to take up literature as a means to awaken the people, stimulate their spirit, and thus save the country. He was renowned for his sharp satires of the darkness of society such as ‘Kuangren riji’ 狂人日記 [A madman’s dairy] (1918) and ‘A Q zhengzhuan’ 阿Q正傳 [The true story of Ah Q] (1921–1922).
