Ouyang Jiong 896-971
He was a native of western Shu (modern-day Sichuan), rose to high ministerial rank under the regimes that came to power in that part of China following the collapse of the Tang Empire in 906. He is chiefly remembered for his euphuistic preface to the Huajian ji [Among the Flowers], a collection of song lyrics by poets active from the last years of the Tang till 940. Ouyang's songs, like others in the collection, are mainly devoted to the theme of romantic love. In part because of the power and influence of the poets represented in it, the Huajian ji was instrumental in forming the period style of the Five Dynasties.
