Shen Jiji c.740-c.800

Tang-dynasty fiction writer and scholar best known for two short-stories written in the literary language, Renshi zhuan [Miss Jen] and Zhen zhong ji [The world inside a pillow]. Born in present day Zhejiang, Shen Jiji was able to gain an official position through the patronage of Yang Yan. When Yang was demoted in 781, Shen was as a result also removed to a minor posting. His stories combine supernatural themes with a sophisticated handling of plot, characterization and incidental detail. Only two of his stories have survived.
