Yu Jian 于堅 1954-

Contemporary poet and prose writer from Kunming, Yunnan province. He began writing classical poems under the influence of his father, but later turned to modern verse after discovering Whitman. He afterwards read Chinese literature at Yunnan University and became an active member of the local literary scene. From the mid-1980s he started gaining prominence as a ‘post-misty’ poet and he was the co-founder of the unofficial magazine Tamen 他們 [They]. His important works include Shi liushi shou 詩六十首 [Sixty poems], Renjian biji 人間筆記 [Notes from the human world], and Yunnan zhebian 雲南這邊 [Here in Yunnan]
