Zheng Zhenduo (Cheng Chen-to) 1898-1958

Modern writer and scholar. Born in Zhejiang, Zheng Zhenduo was involved from a young age in the establishment and editing of a whole variety of literary magazines. In 1920, he helped set up the first magazine devoted to the new theatre, and after the founding of the Literary Association, edited the Wenxue xunkan. In 1922, Zheng established the first magazine for children. From the 1930s onwards, he was also active as a university lecturer and researcher. Important writings by Zheng include Zhongguo wenxue shi [A history of Chinese literature], Ou xing riji [Diary of travels in Europe] and Quhuozhe de daibu [Arrest of the fire-stealer]. He died in a plane crash.
