Student Summer Workshop, 9-11 July 2019


The Graduate Division of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EASC) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is the only interdisciplinary programme in the region that focuses on critical facets of the basic and applied sciences of the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and the interactions between them. Research interests of its dynamic faculty span the whole spectrum of Earth system science. The new graduate programme aims to educate and mentor outstanding young scientists for careers in academic, government, and the private sector.

The workshop is FREE of charge. It will also provide

  • On-campus accommodation for 4 nights (check-in 8 July 2019 /check-out 12 July, 2019)
  • A welcome lunch
  • Participants with economic difficulties may apply for travelling support




Target

This Student Summer Workshop organized by the EASC is open to all potential applicants to our PhD programme, to be admitted in Fall 2020. We welcome undergraduate students in their 3rd / final year of study or master students to apply. 30 students will be invited to the workshop, to be held on the campus of CUHK. Every workshop participant will be interviewed for the PhD admission. The first batch of PhD offers will be made shortly after the workshop.




Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)

The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) aims at attracting the best and brightest students from all over the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong. The Fellowship provides

  • monthly stipend of HK$25,100
  • conference travel allowance of HK$12,600 per year

We strongly encourage applicants who are seeking admission to our full-time PhD programme to apply through the HKPFS. Applicants should demonstrate academic excellence, research ability and potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.

FAQs

  • Is there a quota of the number of PhD candidates to admit during the Summer Workshop?
    We will give PhD offers to top attendees but don’t set any target number of admission. In a sense, the workshop is NOT a competition among workshop attendees. You will only prove to our faculty members that you are an excellent PhD candidate.

  • Should I bring any documents with me? Does a resume help?
    Bring your updated CV if it is different from the one you submitted through the application website. You can bring anything that you think will help to promote yourself.

  • What is the language to be conducted during the interview / poster session?
    The Summer Workshop, including the interview and poster session, will be conducted in English.

  • Is Powerpoint presentation needed during the workshop?
    No. There will be no time slot reserved for Powerpoint presentations by the students.

  • Any tips for me to prepare the interview?
    We suggest you to prepare for the interview ahead. Evaluation criteria include, but not limited to, academic excellence, research interests and experience, English proficiency. Each attendee will be jointly interviewed by the EAS faculty members for about 30 minutes.

  • Will there be an exam?
    All participants will be interviewed individually by their potential supervisors. A few participants will be invited to take a written test. The selected participants of the written test will receive another notification email with details by the end of June.

  • What supporting documents are required to apply the Summer Workshop?
    To apply our Summer Workshop, CV, academic transcripts of Bachelor and Master Degree (if any), HKID Card / Passport or other Identity Doc are required as supporting documents. You will need to apply and upload your supporting document through our online application system.

    Chinese version of transcript is acceptable for applying the summer workshop. However, you will still need to submit English academic transcripts when you formally submit your PhD applications.

  • Do I need a visa/entry permit to come to Hong Kong?
    You are required to obtain a valid entry visa to come to Hong Kong. If you need a formal invitation letter to apply for a visa/entry permit, please send the request to us by email. Please note that "student visa" is not applicable as you are not yet the students of CUHK.

    If you are coming from Mainland China, please apply for standard tourist VISA. The Individual Visit Scheme allows residents in the prescribed mainland cities to visit Hong Kong in their individual capacity. Details could be found at http://www.tourism.gov.hk/english/visitors/visitors_ind.html

  • How long does it take to process my visa/entry permit?
    It normally takes 4 weeks to process a visit / entry permit application. Please note that you are responsible for obtaining the visa / entry permit in time.   • What do I need to prepare for the poster session?
    There will be a poster session during the workshop. You are required to conduct the poster presentation in English. You will need to print and bring the poster to CUHK. The standard size of the poster is 90 cm wide and 120 cm long.

  • Are there any financial support for travel expenses available?
    You should arrange the transportation on your own. In case you have any financial difficulties and would like to apply for travelling support, you can fill in the “Application for travelling support form” and send it back to us, successful applicant will be notified upon the approval of the workshop committee.
