Invited Speakers (in order of presentation)

Dr. Lawrence Chi-ming CHIU

Dr. Lawrence Chiu is the Senior Lecturer in the School of Life Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. Chiu received both the Science Faculty Exemplary Teaching Award and the Senate Committee on General Education Exemplary Teaching Award in 2012. During 2009 to 2012, he was also awarded several UGC-funded Teaching Development Grants on the topics of developing online self-learning systems, integrative teaching strategy for large classes, and mobile game-based learning of essential biology terminologies for enhancing students’ performance, respectively. Currently, he is teaching a number of lecture and laboratory courses for different life science programs, utilizing e-learning systems to motivate students to acquire knowledge actively.

Dr. Lawrence Chi-ming CHIU

Dr. Iris Kok Shuen PANG

Dr. Iris Pang is a lecturer in the School of Life Sciences at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. Pang completed her undergraduate degree in Cell, Molecular and Development Biology at the University of Washington. She later obtained her PhD in Immunology at Yale University, where she studied how the body mounts an immune response to fight influenza virus infection. Apart from research, Dr. Pang has been invited to speak at both regional and international conferences. She received the Distinguished Speaker Award at the Yale University Microbial Diversity Institute Symposium in 2012 and was a speaker at the HKU-Pasteur Immunology Course in 2013. Currently, she teaches the undergraduate laboratory courses in the Cell and Molecular Biology Program (CMBI) at CUHK, which offers a uniquely designed curriculum to train students with a strong interest in laboratory work and scientific research within the realm of cell and molecular biology.

Prof. Kin Ming KWAN

Prof. KWAN Kin Mingis an associate professor in the School of Life Sciences and the Program Director of Natural Science Program, Faculty of Science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanism behind neural development, organogenesis and tumorigenesis using mouse as model organism, with the extensive use of transgensis and gene knockout technology. Prof. Kwan has received numerous awards in recognizing his excellence in research and teaching. He was the awardee of Croucher Foundation Scholarship in 1991-1994 and The Young Researcher Award by CUHK in 2008. He was also awarded the Science Faculty Exemplary Teaching Award by CUHK in 2009 and 2013.

Prof. KWAN Kin Ming

Prof. Liwen JIANG

Prof. Liwen Jiang is the Professor at the School of Life Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Prof. Jiang’s research focus on organelle biogenesis and function in plant cell. Prof. Jiang received awards from teaching and research achievement, including the Exemplary Teaching Award in 2008, Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (1st Class) and Natural Science Awards (2nd Class) from Ministry of Education in 2009 and 2014 respectively, Outstanding Fellow of the Faculty of Science in 2013 and twice winning Research Excellence Award in 2006 and 2008. In 2013, Prof. Jiang established received HK$ 47 million funding from the Sixth Round of Areas of Excellence Scheme, Research Grants Council in Hong Kong, to establish a world-leading centre dedicated for investigating organelle biogenesis and function.

Mr. Jim LAU

Mr Jim Ka Ho LAU is a year 2 undergraduate student of the Food and Nutritional Sciences programme under the 3 year curriculum. As the Production Designer, Jim has been transforming biology knowledge taught at university or obtained from our latest research into animated videos. For the past two years, Jim has produced more than 10 videos for biology education purpose. Currently, he is producing a brand new series of teaching video on immunology and transgensis for the RGC-AoE Centre for Organelle Biogenesis and Function" and "Centre for Cell & Developmental Biology".
