The DNA sequence of an individual not only determines one’s physical appearance, but also unveils useful information such as susceptibility to diseases and undesirable drug induced responses .The sequence information may provide clues to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases like cancer, diabetes and many genetic diseases.

Biomedical Science has been designated as one of the five Major Areas of research under the Focused Investments Scheme in The Chinese University of Hong Kong. On behalf of this scheme, a Core Laboratory was being set up, with services launched in February 2008. Our Core Facilities is the first laboratory in Hong Kong operating the GS FLX sequencer. The NimbleGen Microarray system and 454 Sequencer are integral research tools for the Core Facilities. We have purchased and installed the NimbleGen MS 200 and launched microarray services including Comparative Genomic Hybridization (CGH), Chromatin Immunoprecipitation on Chip (ChIP-chip), DNA methylation, gene expression and Comparative Genome Sequencing (CGS) utilizing the high-density and long-oligo arrays in Jun 2010.
