Academic Advising Workshop: Getting students to receive the help they need

Abstract: In this workshop, basic helping skills that facilitate rapport building with students will be discussed. These skills are particularly important when working with students who may be in need of professional psychological help. Some common barriers to help-seeking and strategies that academic advisors may use to address students’ concerns and resistance will also be described. In addition, an overview of on- and off-campus resources related to mental health will be given.
