Project Objectives
1. To determine the overall effectiveness of the 9-unit English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) curriculum with respect to the uniform outcome statement formulated at the programme level; and
2. To refine the design of the ELTU curriculum structure, course materials, learning activities and assessment approaches based on feedback from students and teachers.
Description of process, outcomes or deliverables
The implementation of the established internal Quality Assurance (QA) mechanism and processes has resulted in the following key deliverables and outcomes:
- Survey results (quantitative and qualitative) of students’ post-course-questionnaires of about 26 courses, and more than 8,000 questionnaires for the project year;
- Survey results (qualitative) of nearly 70 teachers’ post-course evaluation;
- Qualitative feedback from students through focus group interviews and Staff-student Consultative Committee meetings;
- Analysis of grade distributions of all courses over time to monitor students’ progress;
- Archive of student works on a central server for systematic retrieval and review purposes;
- Analyses of IELTS results by entrance English proficiency and by faculty; and report of possible language gain over time;
- Improved curriculum structure, pedagogical practices, assessment approaches, and hence, course effectiveness as evident in the steady improvement of course teaching evaluation (CTE) scores over time; and
- Improved English language proficiency over time as measured by IELTS.
Evaluation
The original arrangements for evaluation of this project were adhered to accordingly with positive outcomes documented. Deliverables have been systematically documented and insights have also been shared with all stakeholders in a timely manner.
Dissemination, diffusion and impact
With the ELTU QA mechanism in place, any course-based feedback obtained would normally be promptly shared among colleagues and student representatives to effect positive changes through team meetings, retreats and the ELTU Intranet. Insights gained would also be shared with the academia through posters, conferences and proceedings.
