Abstract

  • With the advancement in instructional practices and educational technologies, more and more universities are providing teachers with one-on-one consultations to facilitate the adoption of eLearning teaching practices and enhancement of teaching effectiveness.
  • In order to support CUHK teachers in sustaining practice of teaching excellence, this proposed project aims to offer personalized consultation services to teachers to re/design innovative pedagogical approaches. Apart from working in partnership with teachers in implementation of eLearning on course level, the project will facilitate the formation of eLearning Liaison Persons (eLLPs) in each department/ programme to promote new pedagogical and eLearning practices, as well as initiate programme-level curricular innovations.
  • The personalized pedagogical consultation services will be offered by professional instructional designers. The ADDIE model1• will be adopted to ensure a streamlined instructional design approach that focuses on feedback for continuous improvement.
  • An eLLP acts as the bridge between departmental colleagues and the people who provide central eLearning support services. The role of an eLLP is to channel eLearning needs or requests from the programme or individual teachers to us, so that we can provide the most relevant training opportunities. They also channel information about our services and events back to their fellow teachers and curriculum developers.
1 The ADDIE model is a frequently used instructional design framework which includes the following stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. It is a process-based approach to developing teaching and learning content and incorporating feedback throughout (Molenda, 2015).

Brief write-up

Project objectives

The project aimed to provide personalized one-on-one consultation and evaluation services to CUHK teachers and promote innovative pedagogical approaches.

Activities, process and outcomes

Between November 2019 and April 2022, 94 pedagogy consultation sessions were arranged for 43 individual teachers to support them to incorporate eLearning strategies or innovative approaches into their teaching. Also, 15 workshops were given to over 416 teachers and 41 students. These workshops covered a wide range of topics such as online learning and teaching, technology-enhanced learnings, proctored/non-proctored online assessment, eLearning tools, and video production.

Deliverables and evaluation

  • Enhanced teaching effectiveness: Our pedagogical suggestions or advice, that were given in the nearly 100 consultation meetings, were adopted by teachers in their courses with positive student feedback.
  • Improved teachers’ readiness and capacities for adopting eLearning or innovative teaching approaches: Over 400 teachers participated in the training workshops and experience sharing sessions organized in the project. The workshops were well received by the teachers according to the after-event surveys.
  • Dissemination, diffusion, impact and sharing of good practices

their experience with our CUHK community. The CUHK Teaching and Learning Innovation Expo was one of the important occasions for us to present good teaching practices and the consultation service we offered. Besides the Expo, we also encouraged them to disseminate good practices in the forum organized by the Teaching and Learning Community of Practice of CUHK and an inter-university project titled “Virtual Teaching and Learning”.

    Impact on teaching and learning

The increasing number of teachers came to our service and workshops states our contribution in pedagogical support to CUHK community and active response to teachers’ needs and constraints. With ADDIE model as instructional design model, teachers are benefited from our suggested strategies, introduction of eLearning tools and platforms to re/design, organize/create, streamline their course production, as well as getting feedback from users for continuous improvement.
