The present campus of CUHK, founded largely on slopes with extremely limited opportunities for further physical improvements to facilities, is physically inadequate in many ways to meet and serve the University's present and future needs. Additional land is crucial not only for the implementation of the “3+3+4” reform but also the long-term development of the University. A tract of land zoned for Government, Institutional, and Community (GIC) use and reserved for tertiary education in “Area 39” in Pak Shek Kok as shown below is therefore being sought now for land grant from the Government.
Apart from “Area 39” and the main campus at Shatin, “Area 66”, the valley of private farmlands below Shaw College which is inaccessible by the public except via Campus Circuit West, has also been included for a broad outline study and will form part of the long-term strategy beyond the planning period 2021.
