Dr Cheung studied economics in United College, and graduated in 1958. He was among the second batch of graduates of the College. In 1960, he established his own insurance companies, and later expanded his business to a diversified range of areas including transportation, warehousing, shipping and real estates. He is currently the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Pacific Insurance Co., Ltd. and The Pacific Life Assurance Co., Ltd., and is also the Chairman of over thirty companies in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. A famous philanthropist, Dr Cheung founded Thomas H. C. Cheung Foundation Ltd. contributing to the benefit of the community-at-large. He is especially supportive to The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has made magnanimous donations to the University to set up scholarships, build sports facilities, sponsor staff and student activities, and support medical research. Dr Cheung has been a Member of the University Council since 1991 and holds a number of positions as Member of the Audit Committee, the Honorary Fellowship Committee, the Terms of Service Committee, the Board of Advisors for Staff Appointment, Committee on Donations, the 40th Anniversary Celebration Organizing Committee, the 40th Anniversary Fund Raising Committee, the 40th Anniversary Banquet Steering Committee, and the Professor Wu Jie-ping Fund Management Committee. Dr Cheung is also Vice-Chairman of the United College Board of Trustees and Chairman of the United College Endowment Fund Committee. Dr Cheung is dedicated to alumni affairs, and has played a pivotal role in strengthening ties among the alumni and between the University and its alumni. He earned high respect from his fellow alumni and has been continuously elected President of the Alumni Association of United College since 1972, a position which he has been holding for over 30 years. He was also three time President of the Federation of Alumni Associations of CUHK, and is a Director of its subsidiary Education Foundation. CUHK FAA Thomas Cheung Secondary School, CUHK FAA Thomas Cheung School and CUHK FAA Thomas Cheung Kindergarten were all established by this Education Foundation with major donations from Dr Cheung. He also served as Chairman of the School Management Committee of these three schools and CUHK FAA Chan Chun Ha Secondary School for years, and is now still the Emeritus Chairman of the School Management Committees. Dr Cheung is also Life Member of The International Association of Lions Clubs. Dr Cheung Huen Cheong Thomas was conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa by The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1993. He is Honorary Consul for Sri Lanka in Hong Kong and Macao SAR, and was awarded the national honour Sri Lanka Ranjana by the President of Sri Lanka in 1991.
