Public Lecture: Does "Islamic Art" Exist in East Asia?

Release time:2018-03-16 11:30:56

Speaker:Dr. Yuka Kadoi

Date: 22 March 2018, Thursday

Time: 4:30pm-6pm

Venue: G24, Fung King Hey Building, CUHK

About the Lecture:

This lecture sheds new light on the peripheral style of Muslim material culture that evolved in East Asia. By reconsidering the art-historiographical debate on this style - which tends to be viewed as neither typically Islamic nor Chinese - this lecture addresses various methodological and disciplinary challenges when it comes to the study of Islamic art as a history of Asian art.

About the Speaker:

Yuka Kadoi, PhD, is currently Visiting Curator at the Liang Yi Museum and an art historian with the expertise in the art and material culture of the Persian cultural world after the seventh century. She is the author and editor of numerous publications, including Islamic Chinoiserie (2009); The Shaping of Persian Art (2013); Arthur Upham Pope and A New Survey of Persian Art (2016); and Persian Art: Image-making in Eurasia (2018). She has curated several exhibitions, including a major loan exhibition of Persian art at the Liang Yi Museum, entitled "The Blue Road: Mastercrafts from Persia" (20 March - 24 June 2018).
