In order to promote the discipline in Hong Kong, the Research Institute for the Humanities (RIH) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) came to an agreement with the Islamic Cultural Association (Hong Kong) on 31 July 2013. With sponsorship provided by the latter under the agreement, RIH launched the ‘Islamic Studies Initiative’ (ISI) on 13 September 2013. On 12 May 2015, ISI was approved by the management of the university to become the Centre for the Study of Islamic Culture (CSIC).

1. Arabic Calligraphy Workshop (26 Oct, Sat, 2:15pm-5:30pm @ UCA_312)
Arabic calligraphy is a venerated form of Islamic art through which Muslims around the world creatively have expressed the divine truth and themselves for centuries. Join us at the workshop to discover this form of art for yourself and to understand the Arabic system of writing.
2. Festivities Day (28 Oct, Mon, 11am-5pm @ Cultural Square)
The festival’s Opening Ceremony will take place on this day. Come to see performances of Islamic vocal art and martial arts or explore how CUHK Muslim students showcase food, handicraft and Henna painting traditions of their countries.
3. Talk: Peace and Justice from an Islamic Perspective (29 Oct, Tue,7pm-9pm @ CYT_LT4)
Is the religion of Islam as militant and unjust as the Western media portrays it to be? In this talk, Prof. James Frankel will discuss Islamic ideals of justice and peace, ideals that are considered to be two universal values of humanity.
4. Halal Cuisine Workshop (30 Oct, Wed, 6pm-7:30pm @ KKB_LG7)
What is Halal food? What makes cuisine Halal? Is it only for Muslims? Through this workshop, you will come to know about this subject conceptually and practically. What’s more: there will be Halal dishes for you to savour.
5. Talk: Islam and Tolerance (31 Oct, Thu, 7pm-9pm @ YIA_201)
The tale of tolerance as an ability to live with alterity is told as a distinctive achievement of Western secularism. This talk will challenge this tale from an anthropological perspective, examining how Hui Muslims of a small Chinese ethnoreligious minority town go about living pious life in a greater Chinese society that seems to be far removed from ideals of Islam.
6. Friday Congregational Prayer (1 Nov, Fri, 1pm-2pm @ FKH_G24)
Friday to Muslims is like Sunday to Christians. Muslims’ Friday Congregational Prayer is performed on campus. Come and see how this prayer is performed. Then, chat with Muslims while having some refreshments.
7. Film Screening & Discussion: Reluctant Fundamentalist (1 Nov, Fri, 6:30pm-9pm @ YIA_LT 9)
Memories of 9/11 may be fading, but Muslims who found themselves in the middle of a standoff between the West and Islam that followed since face challenges that have no signs of abating. Based on an award-winning novel, the film ‘Reluctant Fundamentalist’ (2012) tells the story of the struggle that one makes in order to find the path out of these challenges.
8. Tour of Mosques in Hong Kong (2 Nov, Sat, 9:45am-1:30pm @ Kowloon Mosque &Wanchai Mosque)
Hong Kong has a multi-ethnic Muslim community that numbers 300,000. This tour will take you to two most important mosques in town. You will have a chance to explore Muslims’ places of worship, meet their religious leaders, ask questions about Islam, try Halal Dim Sum, and talk with local Muslims.
