Joseph Fan is the Professor of Department of Finance & School of Accountancy, and Co-Director of Institute of Economics and Finance of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received Ph.D. in Finance from the Katz Graduate School of Business of the University of Pittsburgh. Before joining CUHK, he has taught in University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He is an expert in corporate finance and governance of emerging market firms. His recent research focus is family business governance, including his pioneer research on Asian family firm successions, marriage and network creation, and family trust ownership. He teaches corporate governance at the MBA and Ph.D. levels, and Family Business Governance in MBA and EMBA programs.
Professor Fan is one of the most well cited financial economists in Asia (almost 4000 citations from Google Scholar and 600+ cites in SSCI). He has published his research in world top academic journals including Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Business, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, and Journal of Financial & Quantitative Analysis. He has won numerous research awards. His corporate governance and family business research has been featured by various business press, including The Economist, Asian Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and South China Morning Post. He has often been invited to present his research and deliver lectures and speeches in prestigious conferences and academic and professional institutions.
Professor Fan has actively served the regional and global academic communities and international organizations. He is an advisory editor of Financial Management, associate editor of International Review of Finance, Journal of Corporate Finance and Pacific-Basin Finance Journal. He has organized and co-organized numerous international conferences, served in numerous international conference committees, and served as a member of the Business Panel of Hong Kong Research Grant Council. He has consulting activities with the World Bank, OECD, and Asian Development Bank. Currently he serves as a member of the World Bank Doing Business advisory board. Professor Fan is married with two children. |
