Professor Tarn graduated from the University of Durham in the United Kingdom and obtained a Bachelor of Architecture degree with 1st class honours in 1957. Later in 1961, he took his Doctor of Philosophy degree in architectural history from the University of Cambridge. He is an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects and holds fellowships of many prestigious academic and professional societies including the Royal Institute of British, Royal Society of Arts, Royal Historical Society and the Society of Antiquaries of London. Professor Tarn has been associated with the University of Liverpool since 1973 when he joined the University to become its Roscoe Professor of Architecture. He has been the Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University until his retirement in 1999. His tie with the University of Liverpool continued since then when he was made Emeritus Professor in the same year. The achievements of Professor Tarn go beyond the education of young architectural professionals. He has made significant contributions to the architecture profession in the United Kingdom. He served in the Royal Institute of British Architects from 1968 to 1992, taking up various important memberships of Committees and Panels under the Institute. Professor Tarn has also served as Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Architects' Registration Council of the United Kingdom, and President and Vice-President of the Liverpool Architectural Society. The Department of Architecture at The Chinese University of Hong Kong benefited significantly from the generous advice of Professor John Tarn. Professor Tarn served as member of the University's Architecture Academic Advisory Committee as soon as the Committee was established in 1988 and took up chairmanship of the Committee from 1992 to 2002. Under his able leadership, the Committee guided the launch and brought about the phenomenal growth of the architecture programme of the University. Professor Tarn has been External Assessor of the Department of Architecture since 1990, contributing tremendously his expertise to the department.
