Dr Thomas Chen has also been enthusiastic in the promotion of local property development and urban renewal. He has served as Vice-President of The Real Estate Developers Association of Hong Kong, Member of the Land and Building Advisory Committee and the Land Development Corporation. As a Member of the Provisional Airport Authority, Dr Chen played a crucial role in the early planning works of Hong Kong's new airport in Chek Lap Kok. Dr Chen is equally committed to public and community services. He is currently Member of the Board of Trustees of the Business and Professionals Federation of Hong Kong. Previously, he served as Chairman of the Hong Kong Securities Clearing Company Limited, Chairman of the Nominating Committee of the Hong Kong Futures Exchange Limited, Member of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange as well as Member of the Basic Law Consultative Committee. Education development in Hong Kong and mainland China has always been one of the major concerns of Dr Chen. He has been Member of various Councils/ Advisory Committees of education bodies; these include Fudan University, Nanjing University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He is particularly supportive of the development of United College at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Since 1991, he has been a Member of the Board of Trustees of the United College, and since 1996, a Member of the Endowment Fund Committee of the United College. Dr Chen has contributed immensely to the advancement of academic and research development and to the improvement of academic facilities of the Chinese University and its United College. In 1991, Dr Chen donated a substantial sum to sponsor the Hong Kong Cancer Institute of the Chinese University in developing various specialist services and research. In recent years, the Chinese University further benefited from generous donations from Si Yuan Foundation, of which Dr. Chen serves as Founding Chairman. These donations brought into being the Si Yuan Amenities Centre and the Si Yuan Amphitheatre in the United College.
