Ms Yan graduated from the Department of English of the Chinese University in 1969 and obtained a Diploma in Education from the Chinese University in 1972. She has worked as a secondary school teacher, and served as supervisor and Board member of secondary and primary schools and kindergartens. In 1976 she joined Radio Television Hong Kong and when she left in 1995, was the Head of RTHK's Education Television Division. Ms Yan continued her career in education as the Assistant to the Episcopal Delegate for Education from the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, a position she held until 1999. A devoted educator, Ms Yan contributed immensely to community services, particularly to the promotion of moral education, Chinese culture and a better education system. She has been Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of Chinese Culture on Net Foundation Limited, Member of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Member of the Steering Committee on Promotion of Volunteer Service, Convener of the Sub-committee on Promotion of Student and Youth Volunteering, Board Member of The Hong Kong Children's Choir, Member of the Board of Directors of The Hong Kong Health Education and Health Promotion Foundation, Council Member of The Family Planning Association of Hong Kong, Member of the Moral Education Concern Group, Trustee of the Trust for the Promotion of Moral Education, Chairman of The Association for the Promotion of Proper Cantonese Pronunciation, Chairman of the School Management Committee and Supervisor, CUHK FAA Thomas Cheung Secondary School, and Supervisor of Dominic Savio Kindergarten. Ms Yan was awarded the Medal of Honour by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2004 for her remarkable contributions. She joined the CUHK Convocation at its inception in 1993 and has served as its Chairman since 1999. She also represents the Convocation to serve on the University Council, and is an active participant of University committees. She has been member of the Executive Committee of the Council, the Search Committee for the Appointment of the Vice-Chancellor, the Task Force to Advise on Institutional Integration, the Reference Group on Institutional Integration, 40th Anniversary Celebration Organizing Committee, Board of Advisors for Staff Appointment, and the Committee on Bilingualism. Currently Board Member of the CUHK FAA Education Foundation and Member of the Board of Trustees of the United College, Ms Yan was President of CUHK FAA in 2000-2001. In her capacity as Chairman of the Convocation, Ms Yan has worked zealously and enthusiastically to promote Convocation activities. She has been convener of the Liaison Sub-committee, co-convener of the Social and Education Affairs Sub-committee and member of University Matters Sub-committee and Fundraising Sub-Committee. She is also member of the newly established Alum eObservers Network Sub-committee and Task Force on the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Convocation. In the past decade, Ms Yan has led many studies of educational issues, compiling reports and recommendations, responding to education consultative papers, conducting surveys and making proposals in response to the government's education and poverty policies.
