Professor Rossa Chiu Wai Kwun
Professor Chiu’s research interests lie in the development of novel prenatal diagnostic approaches through the analysis of nucleic acids released by an unborn child into the circulation of its mother. Such an approach relies simply on the analysis of the mother’s blood and is harmless to the unborn child. This is in contrast to the present invasive methods like amniocentesis. She has also successfully developed non-invasive methods for the prenatal diagnosis of beta-thalassaemia and is currently leading an international multi-centre group for the clinical evaluation of the new approach.
