¡@¡@Professor Li joined CUHK in 1982. Under his leadership, the Department of Surgery made great advances in teaching and research, and performed remarkably in soliciting research funding, gaining international recognition as a medical centre of excellence. Professor Li was twice elected as Dean of Medicine, in 1992 and 1995. During his deanship, the Faculty went from strength to strength, producing top-notch medical professionals for the community. ¡@¡@As Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, Professor Li guided CUHK through Hong Kong's political transition when China resumed the exercise of sovereignty over the territory. He laid the foundation for the University's advancement in the new century. Major academic developments during his term included the establishment of the School of Tourism and Hotel Management, the School of Chinese Medicine, the School of Public Health, the School of Pharmacy, and The Nethersole School of Nursing. Professor Li laid great emphasis on quality assurance mechanisms for teaching and research. He proactively encouraged students to enhance their language abilities, and to broaden their knowledge base and vision. His vice-chancellorship saw the strengthening of general education programmes and the enrichment of college life, as well as the introduction of new projects to boost moral education and leadership training. Under Professor Li's capable leadership, CUHK achieved rapid advances and was recognized as a leading university in the region. The highly efficient administration of CUHK won commendation from the University Grants Committee. Professor Li also exemplified distinguished leadership in safeguarding the academic freedom and autonomy of the University. Professor Li also played an important role in initiating plans for a community college to be run in collaboration with an outside organization, fostering academic links with many centres of excellence worldwide, and encouraging joint projects with local business and industrial organizations, for the betterment of Hong Kong. ¡@¡@Over the years, Professor Li has devoted himself to the development of higher education and medical services in Hong Kong. He has held many important positions in various social service organizations, medical associations, and educational bodies, including the Education Commission, Committee on Science and Technology, the Hospital Authority, the Hong Kong Medical Council, the University Grants Committee, the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong, and the United Christian Medical Services Board. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute, and Vice President of the Association of University Presidents of China. ¡@¡@Professor Li's remarkable contributions in medicine, education and social service have won him many honours, including the Gold Bauhinia Star, an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the President's Gold Medal of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK. He also holds honorary fellowships of various prestigious medical bodies such as the American College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, the Royal Society of Medicine, UK, the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland, and the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. ¡@¡@Professor Li has continued to render valuable services to the local education sector as Secretary for Education and Manpower, a post he took up in August 2002.
