¡@¡@Born in Ningbo, Zhejiang, China, Professor Lu graduated from Zhejiang University in 1964. In 1979, he furthered his studies at Technical University of Aachen in Germany and obtained his doctoral degree in engineering. Then he returned to his alma mater and set up the Fluid Power Transmission and Control Laboratory. He served as Head of the Laboratory, which was later upgraded to became the Institute of Fluid Power Transmission and Control. Professor Lu was the first Director of the Institute, which is among the state key laboratories in China and has trained many engineering scientists. In 1988, Professor Lu became the President of Zhejiang University. In 1993, Professor Lu was appointed Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and later in 1997, became President of the Academy. Professor Lu has made important contributions to the development of mechanical engineering, especially in fluid power transmission and control and higher education in the field of engineering. ¡@¡@Professor Lu owns 20 patents issued by European countries, US and China, has published over 250 important papers on engineering and engineering education, and has authored two books. His research findings have been adopted by many technical handbooks and textbooks for postgraduate students in China, Germany, Japan and Sweden. For his remarkable contributions in the field of engineering science, Professor Lu has received numerous prestigious awards from Germany, including the Rudolf-Diesel Medal in Gold in 1997, the Alexander von Humboldt Medal in 1998, a Knight Commander's Cross (Badge and Star) from the Federal President of Germany in 2000, and the Werner Heisenberg Medal in 2001. His research was listed under the Torch Programme for wider applications and he came second and third in the National Innovation Prize of China in 1988 and 1989 respectively. He won the Super Prize for Guanghua Science Foundation in 1993. Professor Lu was awarded the degree of Doctor of Engineering, honoris causa, by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 1995, an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering by City University of Hong Kong in 1997, as well as a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, by the University of Melbourne, Australia in 2003. He is also an Honorary Member of Senate, TU Berlin, Germany. ¡@¡@Professor Lu has devoted himself to promoting the development of engineering science and national affairs. He was a Fellow of The Third World Academy of Sciences, a Member of the Division of Technological Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He served as Vice-Chairman of the China Association for Science & Technology during 1986 and 1996, Chairman of the Higher Education Consultative Committee of the State Education Commission in 1990-1994 and Vice-President of the International Association of Continuing Engineering Education from 1989 to 1992. He has been a deputy to the National People's Congress, PRC and a Member of the Central Committee of the 14th and 15th National Congress of Communist Party of China, and is currently a Member of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Vice-Chairman of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, Vice-Chairman of the China Overseas Friendship Association, President of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, Chairman of the Chinese Society of the History of Science and Technology, and Adviser to the China Association for Continuing Engineering Education. ¡@¡@Professor Lu maintains very close liaison with academics and scientists in Hong Kong. He has served as a Member of the University Grants Committee of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and is a Special Adviser to the Innovation and Technology Commission of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government since 1999. ¡@¡@Professor Lu has been a staunch supporter of the development of science and technology in Hong Kong and has a long association with CUHK. He was a speaker of the Hong Kong Science Park Symposium hosted by CUHK in 1995. As President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Professor Lu supported the establishment of the first Joint Laboratory for Geoinformation Science (JLGIS), a collaboration between CAS and CUHK in 1997, and he personally officiated at the launching ceremony of JLGIS. He also officiated at the opening ceremony of the Shanghai-Hong Kong Joint Laboratory in Chemical Synthesis, a joint venture among CUHK, The University of Hong Kong and the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry of CAS in 1999. He also supported CUHK in hosting the 107 Xianshan Scientific Symposium on Telescience and Robotics in 1998 and the establishment of Shanghai-Hong Kong-Anson Research Foundation for CAS and CUHK in Molecular Biosciences in 2000.
