- Hairy calyptra is derived from the archegonium and protects the developing capsule [left]. After the removal of calyptra, the capsule with operculum (lid) can be observed [middle]. At maturity, the operculum dries and detaches from the capsule, exposing the peristome and epiphragm to release spores [right].
