The Lee Hysan Clinical Research Laboratories (Clinical Sciences Laboratories) is a unit under the Faculty of Medicine C.U.H.K. It is a joint-user laboratory for the clinical teaching departments at the Prince of Wales Hospital. Users include lecturers, medical doctors, research fellows, research associates, scientific officers, technicians, research assistants, post graduate students (Ph.D. and M.Phil.) and post doctoral research workers. This multi-disciplinary research unit is quite unique in Hong Kong since such a set up encourages exchange of ideas and experiences from different clinical experts. Moreover, this arrangement enables sharing of expensive equipment; research facilities and supportive service.
Users of Lee Hysan Clinical Research Laboratories come from various clinical departments such as Anaesthesia, Accident & Emergency Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology (M&T), Medicine & Therapeutics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics & Traumatology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Surgery. The Lee Hysan Clinical Research Laboratories provide space, central core communal equipment, laboratory supplies, research facilities and general laboratory support as well as technical assistance to the users. The laboratories are located on the 7/F and 10/F of the Clinical Sciences Building at PWH. The Central Core Equipment are mainly located in the communal laboratories as well as in the radioactive room, microscope/dark rooms, incubation room, histological laboratory, animal experiment laboratory, tissue culture room, etc. General Equipment including gamma counter, Beta counters, ultracentrifuges, high speed centrifuges, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, UV/VIS spectrophotometer, Gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography appartus, freeze dryers, vacuum concentrators, operation microscope, fluorescent microscope, inverted microscope, CO2 incubators, laminar flow safety cabinets, tissue processor, microtome, cryostat, liquid nitrogen cell freezers as well as photographic equipment are all provided in the LHS. Specialized equipment including bone densitometer, multi-gas monitor, capillary perfusion monitor, intracranial pressure monitor, X-ray imaging scope as well as image analysis system are also housed in LHS.
Within the Lee Hysan Clinical Research Laboratories, there are also designated areas for individual departments. There are equipment which are acquired by different departments for their special research projects. For example, equipment for molecular biology research such as PCR machine, DNA sequencing apparatus, hybridization oven, electrophoresis apparatus; equipment for the in vitro-fertilization program such as micro-manipulator, cell freezing and micro-injection apparatus; equipment for Orthopaedics research include gait analysis and bone scan apparatus can also be found in LHS.
There are more than sixty clinical research projects currently being conducted within Lee Hysan Clinical Research Laboratories by over 120 researchers including many visiting research fellows from different countries.
