Biography

Dr Kelvin Chong is a surgeon-scientist trained in oculofacial surgery and eye-related molecular and cell biology. Dr Chong graduated at the top of his class at the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2000, and was awarded Honor degree in Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (CUHK). During his undergraduate medical studies he attained 7 distinction awards, 7 academic prizes and 6 scholarships. At the Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) he completed his ophthalmology residency and fellowship training. In 2007 Dr Chong was awarded the Li Po Chun Charitable Trust Fund Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship and a Visiting Clinical Fellowship for 2 year clinical and translational research training at the Division of Orbitofacial and Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery, Jules Stein Eye Institute, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) (preceptor: Prof. Robert Goldberg). He also conducted research at the Division of Molecular Medicine, LA Biomedical Institute, Harbour-UCLA Medical Center (Preceptor: Dr Terry Smith and Dr Raymond Douglas). At CUHK and PWH Dr Chong pioneers Mohs micrographic surgery for periocular tumor. He provides fast-tract referral for combined total thyroidectomy and orbital decompression, topography-guided external orbital radiotherapy for thyroid associated orbitopathy and multi-modal conventional and new immuosuppressants for resistant orbital inflammatory conditions; individualized, small incision orbital decompression for thyroid associated orbitopathy, endoscopic optic canal decompression for traumatic optic neuropathy; small-incision, bone and muscle-sparing optic nerve sheath fenestration for idiopathic intracranial hypertension; endocanalicular lacrimal drainage operations. Dr. Chong serves as the Coordinator of the Orbital and Oculoplastic Surgery Service at both Prince of Wales Hospital Eye Centre and the CUHK Eye Centre. He is also Associate Director of the CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Center at Hong Kong Eye Hospital.
