MI FU 米芾 1051–1107

Mi was a scholar, poet, calligrapher, and painter in the Northern Song dynasty. Known as one of the four greatest calligraphers of his time, he wrote extensively and critically on painting and calligraphy, making daring, penetrative remarks on the works of both his predecessors and contemporaries. His individualistic personality and eccentric behaviour, which are believed to partly account for his unsuccessful political career, earned him the epithet of ‘Madman Mi’ 米顛.
