Wang Zengqi 汪曾祺 1920-1997
Wang was born in Gaoyou, Jiangsu province. He studied in the Department of Chinese of the National Southwestern Associated University and was one of a small group of writers closely associated with Shen Congwen 沈從文 (1902–1988). After 1949 he worked as an editor for various literary magazines such as Beijing Literary Arts 北京文藝, Folk Literature 民間文學, etc., and in 1962 became a playwright with the Beijing Opera Troupe. Resuming writing after the Cultural Revolution, Wang published a number of critically acclaimed essays and short stories in last quarter of the twentieth century.
