Zhou Shoujuan 周瘦鵑 1895-1968

Zhou was an author, screenwriter, and translator. He was a Suzhou native and began to write when he was in secondary school. At the age of sveneteen, he published his first story Ai zhi hua 愛之花 [Flower of love] in Xiaoshuo yuebao, which was later put on stage and became a hit. He was an editor at Zhonghua shuju 中華華書局, editor-in-chief of the literary supplement of the leading Shanghai newspaper Shen bao 申報 and several magazines, including Libailiu 禮拜六 [Saturday], which was a leading magazine of urban fiction. During the Cultural Revolution, he was not able to withstand the pressures placed on him and committed suicide by jumping into a well.
