聯合書院「院長講座系列」─ 「蔣法賢校長講座」
莫理斯爵士主講

香港中文大學聯合書院為感謝七位前院長:蔣法賢校長、凌道揚校長、鄭棟材校長、薛壽生院長、陳天機院長、李卓予院長及黃鈞堯院長對書院的服務和貢獻及表示對他們的敬意，由二零零五年二月起舉辦「聯合書院院長講座系列」，於學期中邀請不同科目的傑出學者主持一系列公開學術講座，讓同學們有機會聆聽世界知名學者的演說，增加知識，擴闊視野。講座將順七位前任院長之任期序命名，以彰誌他們的功績。

該系列首次講座─「蔣法賢校長講座」於二零零五年二月十八日在聯合書院鄭棟材樓C1講室舉行，書院邀請到大學博文講座教授、一九九六年諾貝爾經濟學得獎人莫理斯爵士為主講嘉賓。莫爵士以「The Optimal Growth and Distribution of Human Populations」為題，向在場二百 多位大學及書院師生、校友演講。

聯合書院校董會主席岑才生先生、校友會會長張煊昌博士及院長馮國培教授在演講前親臨致歡迎辭，以誌「院長講座系列」之成立。岑主席並於莫爵士演講後代表書院致送紀念品予莫爵士。會後書院設午宴接待莫爵士及各位與會嘉賓。

United College “Heads of College Lecture Series” – “Dr F I Tseung Lecture”

United College is proud to present the “Heads of College Lecture Series” in appreciation of the instrumental services and contributions seven former Heads had accomplished. They are Dr F I Tseung, Dr Lin Dao Yang, Dr T C Cheng, Professor S S Hsueh, Professor T C Chen, Professor C Y Lee and Professor K Y Wong.

Starting February 2005, the College will invite renowned scholars in different fields of knowledge to deliver lectures at College Assemblies, which will be named after these seven former Heads according to the chronological order of their services at United College. 

The inauguration lecture of the Series “Dr F I Tseung Lecture” was held successfully on 18 February 2005 in Lecture Theatre CI, T C Cheng Building of United College, with Professor Sir James A Mirrlees speaking on the topic of “The Optimal Growth and Distribution of Human Populations”. Professor Mirrlees is  Professor-at-Large of the CUHK and the 1996 Nobel Laureate in Economics. Over 200 UC students, University/College staff and alumni attended the Lecture.

廖秀冬局長在聯合書院講「排汚交易」

聯合書院二月二十五日在大學邵逸夫堂舉行的「書院聚會」上，邀請到環境運輸及工務局局長廖秀冬博士擔任演講嘉賓，以「排汚交易」為題作演講，向在場一千四百多位聯合書院師生解釋「排汚交易」的概念，並引用美國和中國的例子，說明在面對珠江三角洲的區域汚染問題及經濟快速增長的情況下，推行「排汚交易」的重要性。

聯合書院與書院環保學會合辦的「能源智叻星宿舍能源節約比賽」經已舉辦了三年，得到廖秀冬局長熱烈支持捐出「廖秀冬盃」，以示獎勵。廖局長亦於二月二十五日之書院聚會中親自頒發「廖秀冬盃」予2004年比賽冠軍湯若望宿舍。

Dr Sarah Liao Speaking at College Assembly of United College

United College was honoured to have Dr Sarah Liao, Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works of the HKSAR Government, to be the guest speaker of the College Assembly held on 25 February 2005 at SRRSH of the University. Dr Liao spoke on the topic of “Emissions Trading” in air quality control to an audience of over 1,400 UC students and staff. Experiences from the US and Mainland China were used in explaining the concept of “Emissions Trading”. Due to situations including the regional pollution problem of the Peal River Delta and the speedy economic growth, “Emissions Trading” is indispensable, according to Dr Liao.

The third inter-hostels Energy Wise Award Scheme co-organized by the College and the College Environmental Protection Society has successfully concluded. Dr Sarah  Liao presented the “Dr Sarah Liao Cup” she sponsored to the champion hostel Adam Schall Residence at  the College Assembly held on 25 February.
