前中大校長暨本院電子學系創系主任高錕教授獲頒諾貝爾物理學獎

本院電子學系創系主任、香港中文大學第三任校長高錕教授獲瑞典皇家科學院頒授2009年度諾貝爾物理學獎，以表揚其對光導纖維通訊技術發展的重大貢獻。

高錕教授於1966年發表了《介電波導管的光波傳送》一文，及後更研製出第一個光纖通訊系統，促成互聯網的出現，使人類的資訊科技向前邁進一個新世紀。高教授也因而被尊稱為「光纖之父」，其獲獎乃實至名歸。

本院同仁在此向高錕教授致以至誠祝賀，並衷心感謝高教授為本院帶來崇高的榮耀。

Former Vice Chancellor of CUHK Cum Founding Chairman of Electronics Department of the College Awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics

The founding chairman of the Electronics Department of our College and former Vice Chancellor of CUHK, Professor Charles K Kao has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for his groundbreaking contribution to the transmission of light in fibres for optical communication.

Professor Charles K Kao presented the paper "Dielectric-fibre surface waveguides for optical frequencies" in 1966 and developed the first optical fibre communication system which triggered the existence of internet. Leading the information technology of human history marched to a new era. Professor Kao is accordingly known as the "Father of Fibre optics".

聯合書院五十三周年院慶活動

書院五十三周年院慶典禮訂於10月23日（星期五）上午11時30分假大學邵逸夫堂舉行。書院校董會主席岑才生先生及香港特別行政區政府環境局常任秘書長王倩儀太平紳士(79/英文)將擔任主禮嘉賓，並致勉辭。

典禮後，書院隨即於聯合校園舉行院慶生日會，書院教職員聯誼會並送出大蛋糕致賀。生日會後，並於張祝珊師生康樂大樓頂樓文怡閣舉行院慶午餐。

United College 53rd Anniversary Activities

The 53rd Anniversary Ceremony of the College will be held on Friday, 23 October 2009 at 11:30 am at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall of the University. Mr Shum Choi-sang, SBS, JP, Chairman of the College Board of Trustees and Ms Anissa Wong Sean-yee, JP(79/ENG), Permanent Secretary for the Environment, The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, will officiate at the Ceremony.

Immediately after the Ceremony, there will be a birthday party on the College campus. The College Staff Association will sponsor a birthday cake for the occasion. The day's highlight will be the Anniversary Luncheon at the College Staff Common Room at 1:15 pm. The College Student Union will also host a series of activities to celebrate the occasion as highlighted below:

聯合書院明德獎

書院新設立「聯合書院明德獎」，旨在表揚在大學肆業期間整體學業成績卓越，在領袖才能及服務方面亦有出色表現的本院應屆畢業生。2009年生化系畢業生馮濤聲同學被選為第一屆明德獎得獎人，此項書院最高榮譽的獎學金將於本年10月23日在書院第53屆院慶典禮上頒發。

United College Ming De Scholarship

The College has newly established the "United College Ming De Scholarship" to honour a final-year UC student for having achieved academic excellence, manifested leadership ability as well as performed outstanding services to the College and the Community at large during his/her tenure at the University. Mr Fung To-sing, Biochemistry graduate in 2009, has been selected by the College as the first recipient of the honorable award, which will be presented at the College's 53rd Anniversary Ceremony to be held on 23 October 2009.

陝西師範大學訪問聯合書院

陝西師範大學文學院院長樊列武教授及文學院韓寶育教授於2009年10月5日訪問聯合書院，與本院院長馮國培教授及書院通識教育副主任張雙慶教授交流，並參觀書院校園。

Shaanxi Normal University Visited United College

Professor Fan Liewu, Dean of Chinese Language and Literature School, Shaanxi Normal University and Professor Han Baoyu, Shaanxi Normal University visited United College on 5 October 2009. Professor Fung Kwok-pui, College Head and Professor Chang Song-hing, Associate Dean of General Education, received the guests who had a campus tour afterward.

思源文娛中心消息――調製雞尾酒工作坊

聯合書院思源文娛中心會所管理委員會於2009年9月22日舉辦調製雞尾酒工作坊，由思源文娛中心主管陳志偉先生教授數款流行雞尾酒調製方法，逾四十名同學出席。
　

United College Si Yuan Amenities Centre―Workshop on Cocktail Blending and Tasting

United College Si Yuan Amenities Centre Club Management Committee organised a Workshop on Cocktail Blending and Tasting on 22 September 2009. The speaker of the Workshop was Mr Alan Chan, Supervisor of Si Yuan Amenities Centre. Mr Chan demonstrated how to blend Frozen Chocolate Daiquiri, Grasshopper and Bloody Mary. Over 40 students attended.

署理院長任命

院長馮國培教授於2009年10月9日至11日前往昆明中國科學院昆明動物研究所訪問。上述期間由書院通識教育副主任張雙慶教授出任署理院長。

Appointment of Acting Head

Professor Fung Kwok-pui, College Head, was invited by the Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences from 9 to 11 October 2009. Professor Chang Song-hing, Associate Dean of General Education, was the Acting Head during the above period.

書院聚會——德育講座

講題：香港優勢，勝在有你同ICAC
講者：蘇張麗影女士

2009年9月25日上午在西部教學大樓LT6講堂舉行的『德育講座』，邀請到廉政公署社區關係處首席教育及宣傳主任蘇張麗影女士(英文/74)以「香港優勢，勝在有你同ICAC」為題作演講。

蘇張麗影女士向在場四百多位同學詳細講解廉政公署的成立經過、運作架構及推廣反貪的公民意識。在答問環節之中，在場同學反應熱烈。

另，書院亦在是次「書院聚會」上，由院長馮國培教授致送「致賀狀」予統計學系李俊文教授，恭賀李教授獲選為「美國統計學會院士」(2009)。

College Assembly—Moral Education Talk

Topic: Hong Kong – Our Advantage is You and the ICAC
Speaker: Mrs Vanessa So

At the "Moral Education Talk" held on 25 September 2009 at LT6, Teaching Complex at Western Campus, Mrs Vanessa So (ENG/74) of the Public Relations Department of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) delivered a speech on the topic "Hong Kong–Our Advantage is You and the ICAC".

Mrs So introduced in details the establishment, functioning and anti-corruption promotion projects of ICAC to the 400 plus audience. The response from the students was very encouraging in the Q&A section.

Also at this College Assembly, a congratulation certificate was presented to Professor Thomas Lee of the Department of Statistics for being elected as "Fellow of American Statistical Association" in 2009, by Professor Fung Kwok-pui, the College Head .

書院聚會——就業發展講座

2009年10月9日上午，聯合書院假西部教學大樓LT6講堂舉行「就業發展講座」，書院蒙　TCL企業融資總監印國庭先生擔任嘉賓主持，更邀請到香港興業國際集團人力資源總經理鍾惠儀女士及古根漢資本市場香港區主管林曼雅女士擔任演講嘉賓，分別以「踏上青雲路」及「建基立業」為題，為四百多位聯合同學帶來寶貴的工作經驗分享。三位嘉賓為書院及大學校友。

書院聚會上署理院長張雙慶教授代表書院向工程學院馮蔚慈教授致賀。馮教授最近獲頒第二十五屆IEEE數據工程國際會議(ICDE2009)最具影響力論文獎。

College Assembly—Career Development Talk

A “Career Development Talk” was held by United College in the morning of 9 October 2009, at Lecture Theatre 6 of the Teaching Complex at Western Campus. The College was honored to have Mr Sunny Yan, Director of Corporate Finance of TCL, to be the Moderator. Ms Florence Chung, The General Manager–Group Human Resources of HKR International Ltd and Ms Norris Lam, Head of Guggenheim Capital Markets (HK) were the guest speakers for the Talk with topics “Onto an Ascending Path” and “Building a Foundation” respectively, to share their valuable working experience with over four hundred United College students. The three guests are alumni of the University and the College.

At the College Assembly, Professor Chang Song-hing, Acting College Head, congratulated Professor Ada Fu of the Faculty of Engineering, on being honored with the Influential Paper Award at the 25th IEEE International Conference on Data Engineering (ICED2009), on behalf of the College.

The issue of United We Advance will be published in December 2009.will feature on the Social Work Department of the College.
