Wu Yee Sun College, a constituent college of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, was established in 2007 with generous support from the Wu Yee Sun Charitable Foundation Limited.  The College’s motto, 'Scholarship and Perseverance', comes from The Doctrine of the Mean by Confucius: 'One must make extensive study of what is good, examine it with a critical eye, reflect upon it with care, judge it with a clear mind, and carry it out in earnest'.

The motto reflects the assiduousness and fortitude of Dr. Wu Yee Sun (1904-2005), an entrepreneur renowned for his business achievements and his expertise in 'artistic pot plants'. Of no less importance were his dedication to others and his support for charitable causes.  Success in our knowledge-based society nowadays requires not only innovative and forward-looking thinking, but also moral courage grounded in a sense of justice, trustworthiness, and humility.  It is thus my sincere wish that our students can follow the example set by Dr. Wu: striving for success with an entrepreneurial spirit and social responsibility.  Our college is a place where students pursue their ideals with passion and conviction, gather not just knowledge but wisdom, nurture their awareness of social injustices and problems, and commit to caring for the underprivileged. 

First learn how to live as a good human being, then go and acquire practical skills – so goes an ancient Chinese saying.  I hope students at our college can do both.
