Field Trips

We offer two field trip options on the afternoon of 18 January, 2014.

  1. Hong Kong Heritage Museum

The first option is the Hong Kong Heritage Museum (香港文化博物館) in Shatin, which is not far from the CUHK campus. The museum features permanent exhibitions such as the New Territories Heritage Hall and the Cantonese Opera Heritage Hall. We will arrange a one-hour guided tour in one of the museum exhibitions. Participants are free to visit other parts of the museum on their own. Also, the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery (萬佛寺), founded in 1951 by Venerable Yuet Kai (月溪法師), is within walking distance from the museum.

  1. Sikh Temple and Islamic Centre

The second option is a trip to two spiritual places: The Masjid Ammar and Osman Ramju Sadick Islamic Centre and the Khalsa Diwan Sikh Temple. Hong Kong is truly an international city and thriving religious diversity is evidence of city's rich lifestyle mosaic. Both of the places are situated in one of Hong Kong Island busiest districts - Wanchai.

The coach bus will be leaving from outside of YIA at 1:30 pm sharp, so please be punctual. We will first visit the Sikh temple and then go to the mosque. Fieldtrip will last from 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

Please be reminded that your interest in religion should also go along with respect. For the dress code, please wear long pants/jeans, avoid any panty hose/tights, dresses/skirts for we will be sitting on the floor. Wear sweatshirts with hoods or cover your hair with a headscarf during the visit (clean headscarves are also available in the temples).

The Masjid Ammar and Osman Ramju Sadick Islamic Center was opened in 1981. It has male and female prayer halls, Islamic studies library, madrasa and canteen. We will visit the prayer hall and have the conversation with the Imam of the mosque, who will give a short introduction to the Islamic worldview.

The Khalsa Diwan Sikh Temple was first established at the start of the 20th century but the building was built in 1980s. Today the temple offers free meals, medical consultation services and martial arts and Punjabi language classes. It also has kindergarten and a library. Devotees will show us the temple and introduce the Sikh worldview and culture.

After the field trip, participants are free to enjoy other Wanchai sightseeing places or enjoy shopping on the nearby Causeway Bay area.
