Convenor’s Message
Dear Members and Friends,

Welcome to the second Policy Research @ HKIAPS e-Newsletter. I hope that this newsletter will keep you updated on our efforts and plans to encourage colleagues to be aware of the policy impact of academic studies.

Policy Research @ HKIAPS is an interdisciplinary platform that was established in January 2018 to advance high-quality and evidence-based research on public policies, to promote collaboration between the academic and policymaking communities, and to translate academic research by CUHK researchers into public policies and other forms of impact.

In the past few months, Policy Research @ HKIAPS held a series of events and research projects to engage researchers and strengthen local and international connectivities. The highlight was the holding of the first public policy forum on the career development of Hong Kong youths in the mainland. With inspiring discussions and the sharing of experiences among the participants, the forum provided opportunities for constructive communication between policy stakeholders. In March, I attended the Renmin University of China–Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) Think Tank Summit in Beijing together with Prof. Carlos Lo and Prof. Yuan Xu. I presented a plenary address on “Connecting CUHK to the Green Development along the Belt and Road”, while the two professors shared their research insights on environmental governance and energy policies. I also attended the planning meeting of the WUN International Policy Research Network. In April I attended the World Women University Presidents Forum in Wuhan. I advocated the role of senior university management in promoting gender equity and related research in the universities’ internationalization efforts.

Within CUHK campus, we have hosted policy research seminars on policies on ageing and on the US-China trade relationship. A conference co-organized with Chinese Academy of Social Sciences was held in July. Our new research projects on ethnic minorities, sexual harassment, women leadership, and young people’s perceptions of the future have been launched and are on track.

In the coming months, we will continue with our efforts to encourage CUHK researchers to participate in policy pathways at the local, national, and international levels and enhance the research impact of CUHK. In November, we will get ready for the second public policy forum focusing on another pressing public policy area: environment and sustainability. Please stay tuned!

As the Convenor of the platform, I would like to express a sincere welcome to all of our new members, and my heartfelt gratitude to all. The continuous collaboration and support of our partners and friends are always appreciated. CUHK faculty members are encouraged to take part in this platform focusing on capacity building for policy research at CUHK. Please share with us your research that can be translated into policies and join us in heightening our research impact and in contributing to society at the same time.

On behalf of Policy Research @ HKIAPS, I thank you for your participation and wish you and your family a happy Mid-Autumn Festival.
