Southern Institute of Chinese Linguistics

Southern Institute of Chinese Linguistics, a joint initiative of Sun Yat-sen University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and University of Macau, is organized by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance for Chinese (GHMUAC) with the aim of promoting Chinese linguistics and serving as a platform for intellectual exchange among colleagues and students of the field based in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Greater Bay Area).

Background

A number of workshops and summer institutes on Chinese linguistics proven effective have been offered regularly across the country so far. It is a pity, however, that no similar academic exchange platform has yet been seen in Southern China, including Hong Kong and Macau.

GHMUAC was established in July 2019 by Sun Yat-sen University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and University of Macau to promote cooperation in the field of Chinese language and linguistics at a higher level among universities in the Greater Bay Area.

In view of the absence of an effective platform for intellectual exchange in Chinese linguistics in the Greater Bay Area, GHMUAC launches Southern Institute of Chinese Linguistics in 2020, which is supported by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance.

Southern Institute of Chinese Linguistics is mainly open to colleagues and students based in the Greater Bay Area while also welcomes those beyond. The Institute, giving its courses in winter, when is the most comfortable and fascinating season in Southern China and a good time for studying, seeks to be a useful supplement to other existing courses often held at other times.

Motto

These words of the late Prof. Fei Xiaotong, a renowned Chinese sociologist and social activist, are full of wisdom.¹ In choosing these words as its motto, the Institute aspires to build up an academic exchange platform of inclusiveness and diversity.

Emblem

The emblem consists of two Ls and an N. The two Ls represent “Language” and “Linguistics” respectively, while L and N are initials of ling nan, literally meaning the South of the Nanling Mountains. The three letters link to each other to form a mountain-like motif in the middle, which stands for the five mountain ranges that make up the Nanling Mountains in the area. Moreover, the outside circle formed by the two Ls not only implies the integration and interdependence of Chinese linguistics, but echoes to the Institute’s motto of “Through mutual understanding of diversity, the world will be a harmonious and united one” as well.
