Call for Papers

In recent years, the field of Chinese Studies has witnessed a significant surge in interest regarding China's historical interactions with its rivers, seas, and oceans. This emerging focus not only enriches but also decentralizes the prevailing land-centric narratives that have long dominated the understanding of Chinese history, culture, and society.

At the forthcoming 11th Young Scholars’ Forum in Chinese Studies, we are delighted to announce the theme Waterways and Global China: Ecology, Agency, and Cultural Formation. This theme will investigate the complex dynamism between waterways and the broader context of Global China. The forum aims to gather emerging scholars and researchers from around the globe to engage in a rigorous exploration of the following subthemes:

•        Imapcts of rivers, coasts, and seas on China;
•        Community, hydrological landscape, and water infrastructure;
•        Water management, disasters, and the environment in Chinese civilization;
•        Philosophies, religious faiths, symbols, iconographies, and motifs about water;
•        Cultural and knowledge transmission through waterways;
•        Global Chinese communities and their movements;
•        Waterways in literature, art, and cinema.

Participants are expected to be proficient in both English and Chinese.

The conference will only cover expenses for lodging and round-trip transportation (economy class) for the participants*. The organizer will provide maximum subsidy of 1000 USD subject to approval. Conference registration is free.

Papers will be selected by a committee from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Local faculty will serve as discussants for the selected papers. Publication for selected papers will be considered after the Forum.
