Biography of Minister Wang Guangtao
Minister Wang Guangtao was born in 1943 in Shanghai, the family came originally from Xiuning county, Anhui province.
Minister Wang studied in the Department of Urban Construction of Tongji University in 1960, and obtained a Master of Engineering degree from the Department of Road and Bridge of Tongji University in 1981. Since 1981, he had been an engineer with the Technical Section of the Urban and Rural Construction Committee of Xuzhou city, Jiangsu province. Subsequently, he was promoted to be the chief of the Urban Construction Section, Deputy Chief Engineer, and Deputy Director of the Committee. In 1984, he was appointed as the Vice-Mayor of Xuzhou city. From 1989, he had been Director of the Urban Construction Department and Chief Engineer of the Ministry of Construction.
In 1995, Minster Wang was the Deputy Secretary of Chinese Communist Party of the City Committee of Harbin city, Heilongjiang province, later acting Mayor and Mayor of Harbin city. In 1998, he was Vice-Major of Beijing Municipality, and was appointed as the Minister of Construction in December, 2001. the appointment was confirmed in March 2003 at the 10th National People's Congress. He is now Adjunct Professor at Tsinghua University and Tongji University and PhD supervisor. In September 2005, Minister Wang was inaugurated as the Honorary Professor in the Department of Architecture at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
