The 2nd Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Congress held in conjunction with The 10th International Symposium of Ophthalmology – Hong Kong

The 2nd Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Congress was held in conjunction with The 10th International Symposium of Ophthalmology – Hong Kong, (http://www.apgc-isohk-2014.org) from 26th to 28th September 2014 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. This year over 460 lectures were presented by more than 400 distinguished speakers from over 30 countries. The total number of delegates exceeded 1,300. The photo album which captures all precious moments in the congress is now available at here.

第二屆亞太青光眼醫學會及第十屆香港國際眼科博覽會(http://www.apgc-isohk-2014.org) 已於2014年9月26至28日，在香港會議展覽中心順利舉行。是次活動非常成功，來自30多個國家的 400多位世界知名講者共作出460個專題分享，參加者超過1,300多位。博覽會照片已經上載網上，請按此觀賞。

The 3rd Li Ka Shing Foundation International Ophthalmic Research Student Forum

The 3rd Li Ka Shing Foundation International Ophthalmic Research Student Forum was successfully held on 25 September 2014. We received an overwhelmed submissions of papers all over the globe. A total of 38 papers were selected and presented during the Forum. Prizes were awarded to the top three candidates in Ophthalmology and Visual Science separately.

第三屆李嘉誠基金會國際眼科研究生論壇

第三屆李嘉誠基金會國際眼科研究生論壇已順利於2014年9月25日在中大眼科及視覺科學學系舉行。是次活動反應非常熱烈，吸引來自世界各地的博士生投稿。我們的專業評審最後挑選了38份研究文章在論壇當天發表。評審會在眼科與視覺科學的範疇上分別選出表現最優秀的3位學生，以作表揚。

Career Experiential Event with YWCA

We cooperated with Hong Kong Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) to hold a career experiential event for a group of 40 children. They came to visit Hong Kong Eye Hospital and CUHK Eye Centre. There are also a health talk and group discussion on eye care profession including ophthalmology, ophthalmic nursing and optometry.

Problem Based Learning (PBL) Program

A group of trainees from Shanghai Institute of Health Sciences (SIHS) came to our CUHK Eye Centre to have Problem Based Learning in different medical topics. Apart from case discussions and presentations, they also visited our Eye Centre, research laboratories and medical institutions.

Prof Clement Tham has been appointed to be next Chair of the Scientific Program Committee of the World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC) in, Mexico, 2016.

Prof Clement Tham has been appointed by the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) to be the next Chair of the Scientific Program Committee of the World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC) in Mexico, 2016 and he has also been elected to be the Board of Trustees of the ICO.

譚智勇教授獲委任為2016年世界眼科學術大會會議學術委員會主席

譚智勇教授獲國際眼科理事會委任為2016年世界眼科學術大會會議學術委員會主席並同時獲委任為國際眼科理事會成員之一。2016年世界眼科學術大會將墨西哥瓜達拉哈拉舉行。

The two weeks program provided introduction and instructions for the Standard Operation Procedures (SOP) to new PhD and MPhil students. The program included Graduate Seminars of Year 2 & Year 3 PhD students and presentation sessions by newly enrolled Year 1 PhD & MPhil students.

CUHK Ophthalmic Biology Training Program

This one week program provided intensive training in technologies and skills required in biological aspects of biological research, attending to animal studies, cell culture and histopathology. With Prof Benjamin Li and Prof Hector Chan as program directors, the schedules and activities were coordinated by Dr Waiying Li and Dr Ye Cong Kevin. The trainees included post-graduate students and young researcher scientists from CUHK and Shanghai Institute of Health Sciences. The program included hands-on practical work, small group tutorials, and demonstrations. Some workshops were held at the laboratories at the School of Biomedical Sciences at CUHK campus.

香港中文大學眼科生物學培訓計劃

這個培訓計劃為期一星期，主要在生物研究技術，動物研究，細胞培養和組織病理學方面作出密集的訓練。李福來教授和陳新安教授作為培訓計劃的主管，而計劃的時間和活動安排由李維英博士和葉聰博士協調。計劃學員包括來自香港中文大學和上海醫藥高等專科學校的研究生和年輕的研究科學家。培訓計劃的內容包括硏究實驗工作，小組討論和示範。有一些工作坊在香港中文大學生物醫學學院的實驗室進行。

Student News: Our PhD students won top prizes

Dr Chen Xue and Dr Rong Shisong won the top two prizes of the best presenters at the 3rd National Ophthalmic Research Student Forum at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Guangzhou, among contestants from major eye centers of the country including, Peking University, Peking Union Medical College, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Shanghai Fudan University, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, and Joint Shantou International Eye Center. Dr Chen Xue is our visiting scholar from Nanjing Medical University and PhD student of Prof Zhao Chen, co-supervised by Prof Calvin Pang. Dr Rong Shisong is our 2nd year PhD student supervised by Dr Guy Lijia Chen. Their topics of presentations were “Mutation Analysis of Pre-mRNA Splicing Genes in 31 Chinese Families with Autosomal Dominant Retinitis Pigmentosa” and “Genetic risk factors for primary glaucoma: a systematic review and critical assessment” respectively.

陳雪醫生和榮世松醫生在廣州中山大學中山眼科中心舉行的第三屆全國眼科研究生論壇贏得最佳演講者獎項。論壇的參賽者主要來自全國各大眼科中心，包括北京大學，北京協和醫學院，北京同仁醫院，上海復旦大學，中山大學中山眼科中心，聯合汕頭國際眼科中心。

陳雪醫生是來自南京醫科大學的名譽訪問學人，她也是趙晨博士和彭智培教授的博士學生。榮世松醫生是我們的二年級博士研究生，他也是陳理佳助理教授的學生。他們的演講主題分別是“Mutation Analysis of Pre-mRNA Splicing Genes in 31 Chinese Families with Autosomal Dominant Retinitis Pigmentosa”和“Genetic risk factors for primary glaucoma: a systematic review and critical assessment”。

Dr Yang Mingming, our final year PhD student supervised by Prof Calvin Pang, presented a paper on “A Critical Review on the Roles of Genetic Factors in Uveitis” and won the top prize in the 2nd Young Doctors and Research Students Forum in Shenyang.

World Glaucoma Congress Vancouver

Prof Christopher Leung, Prof Clement Tham and Prof Calvin Pang spoke at the World Glaucoma Congress and participated in various research and international meetings. The World Glaucoma Congress is the largest glaucoma meeting held anywhere in the world to date.

Ophthalmology Day 2013

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s annual Ophthalmology Day for medical year 5 undergraduate students was held on 8th and 29th June 2013 at Lui Che Woo Clinical Sciences Building, Prince of Wales Hospital. More than 160 students participated in the event on both days.

Our Professors discussed their studies and clinical experiences with the medical students and introduced several major issues in various common eye diseases and latest research projects in ophthalmology and visual sciences.

In addition to the experience sharing, our Professors also took this occasion to introduce the latest development in the ophthalmology and the state-of-the-art equipment installed in the recently built Lee Wing Kit Advanced Ophthalmic Training and Education Centre.

香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系一年一度的眼科資訊日已於六月八日和二十九日在沙田威爾斯親王醫院呂志和臨床醫學大樓舉行。 眼科資訊日主要為醫學院五年級學生舉辦；超過160名醫學院五年級學生參加了是次活動，場面熱鬧。

我們的教授向與會學生分享他們的研究和臨床經驗，及介紹了各種常見眼疾的重要課題和眼科及視覺科學的最新研究項目。

除了經驗分享外，教授們亦藉此機會向與會學生介紹了安裝在新近落成的利榮傑高等眼科培訓及教育中心內的先進眼科診斷技術及培訓設備。

Visit of the Hospital Authority Chief-Executive and Board Members

The Chief Executive of the Hospital Authority (HA) - Dr Leung Pak Yin, together with other HA Board Members and executives, visited the Lee Wing Kit Advanced Ophthalmic Training and Education Centre (AOTEC) and CUHK Eye Centre (CUHKEC) at the Hong Kong Eye Hospital on the 28th June, 2013. During the visit, Dr Leung and the HA Board Members were updated of the latest development of AOTEC and CUHKEC, as well as the HA Lion Eye Bank housed inside AOTEC. The visitors also took this opportunity to have a close encounter with various advanced ophthalmic training and research equipment in the two centres.

Student News: Ms Heather Mak won top prize and our other students collected awards

At the 2nd Li Ka Shing Foundation Ophthalmology Graduate Student Forum, Shantou, our students performed brilliantly and almost swept all prizes: Ms Heather Mak, won the top award of best presenter on her paper, “Imaging the Iris with Swept Source Optical Coherence Tomography: Relationship Between Iris Volume and Primary Angle Closure”, Dr Tan Shaoying Ellen, “Diurnal Intraocular Pressure Profile in Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma”, Dr Qin Yongjie, “Anti-inflammatory treatment of green tea extract on endotoxin-induced uveitis model in rat”, Dr Rong Shisong, “Major Genetic Risk Factors for Primary Glaucoma: Knowledge from a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Association Studies”. 我們的學生在汕頭舉行的第二屆李嘉誠基金會眼科研究生論壇表現非常出色，囊括了大部份的獎項：麥嘉瑤小姐憑論文“Imaging the Iris with Swept Source Optical Coherence Tomography: Relationship Between Iris Volume and Primary Angle Closure”贏得最佳演示獎項，譚少英醫生的論文是“Diurnal Intraocular Pressure Profile in Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma”，覃泳傑醫生的論文是“Anti-inflammatory treatment of green tea extract on endotoxin-induced uveitis model in rat”，榮世松醫生的論文是“Major Genetic Risk Factors for Primary Glaucoma: Knowledge from a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Association Studies”。

Invited Lecture – by Professor Richard Kuhn, Purdue University, USA

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (“DOVS”) was pleased to invite Professor Richard Kuhn, an eminent molecular and cell biologist from Purdue University, USA to visit Hong Kong and the Shantou University/The Chinese University of Hong Kong Joint Shantou International Eye Center in Shantou, China (“JSIEC”) on 20th June 2013. Professor Kuhn had shared his knowledge in “Molecular Dissection of Dengue Virus and Challenges for Vaccines” in the Invited Lecture today

During his visit this time, Professor Kuhn officiated the opening of the "JSIEC - Purdue University Joint Research Laboratory for Eye Drug Discovery" in JSIEC, Shantou. The establishment of the research laboratory would further foster the collaboration between DOVS, JSIEC and the Prude University.

The Reader's Digest Trusted Brands Survey has been conducted for 15 years and is recognized as one of the most representative branding surveys in Asia.

The recent survey was conducted by renowned research firm Ipsos in October 2012 in Asia – Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, India, Philippines and Malaysia. Approximately 7,000 respondents were interviewed by paper mail-outs, phone, face-to-face and online surveys, of which close to 900 were from Hong Kong. 三度榮獲《讀者文摘》信譽品牌獎

香港中文大學激光視力矯正中心今年再創佳績，連續第三年獲《讀者文摘》「信譽品牌」獎。

對於香港中文大學激光視力矯正中心（下簡稱矯視中心）連續第三年獲頒「信譽品牌」，香港中文大學眼科中心總監譚智勇講座教授感到高興。譚教授表示：「能夠得到廣大公眾的信賴，我們要向矯視中心的全體員工致以衷心感激。今後我們會繼續努力，不斷加強科研項目及提升服務水平，務求為每位有需要之市民提供最佳服務，以及最適切和最安全的矯視手術。」

香港中文大學眼科中心隸屬香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系，中心轄下的激光視力矯正中心自1996年成立至今，一直致力激光矯視的臨床及基礎研究，並以培訓專業眼科醫生為己任，成績斐然。同時中心亦為市民提供最個人化的激光視力矯正手術，是全港唯一結合大學科研、培訓與醫療服務的激光視力矯正中心。

Annual Meeting American Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Seattle

Prof Chris Leung and Prof Calvin Pang led meetings at ARVO. Prof Pang spoke at the UNITE Signing Ceremony on 6th May. UNITE is the Global Uveitis Consortium led by the National Eye Institute. Prof Pang and Prof Zhang Mingzhi hosted the ARVO CUHK-JSIEC Research Networking Evening on 8th May. Dr Fai Leung was the speaker.

梁啟信教授和彭智培教授主持美國視覺及眼科研究協會(ARVO)年度會議會議。彭教授於5月6日舉行的UNITE簽字儀式上發表演說。 UNITE是由美國國家眼科研究所為首的全球葡萄膜炎聯盟。彭智培教授和張銘志教授於5月8日主持了ARVO香港中文大學 – 汕頭大學/香港中文大學聯合國際眼科中心的研究晚會。而梁旭輝博士是其中的一位演講者。

Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Centre (OMTC) - Phacoemulsification Workshop

Totally 8 resident doctors from Hong Kong Eye Hospital (HKEH) and Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) have complted the Phacoemulsification Workshop at the Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Centre (OMTC) held on 15th to 24th April 2013 organised by the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS). Similar to the Basic Microsurgical Workshop organised in December 2012, the programme comprised of two lectures followed by wet lab training with porcine eyes and human nucleus as well as experiencing the EyeSi system - a high-end virtual reality simulator for intraocular surgical training, to develop surgical proficiency.

眼科顯微手術培訓中心 –白內障超聲乳化手術工作坊

共8名香港眼科醫院及威爾斯親王醫院的駐院醫生已於2013年4月15日至24日期間參加並順利完成由香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系眼科顯微手術培訓中心舉辦的白內障超聲乳化手術工作坊。與2012年12月舉辦的基礎顯微外科手術工作坊類近；是次工作坊共分為三部分，學員完成兩節課堂後，以豬眼及人類細胞核作手術實踐練習，並透過EyeSi虛擬手術訓練系統的練習來提升學員進行手術的精確度。

New member of the DOVS family – Dr Yam Cheuk-sing Jason

Dr Yam Cheuk-sing Jason joined Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, CUHK as Assistant Professor in February 2013. Dr Yam graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong in 2005. He obtained the Master of Public Health (MPH) in 2010 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS) in 2011. He received overseas training in Paediatric Ophthalmology in Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, and Strabismology with Prof David Guyton in Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and with Prof Kenneth Wright in Los Angeles. He received the Best Poster Presentation in 2009 Annual Scientific Meeting Hong Kong. He serves as a Council member of the Asia-Pacific Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology Society. Dr Yam is interested in all aspects of paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, including congenital cataract, retinoblastoma, myopia, paediatric anterior segment disorders, infantile and intermittent exotropia, and restrictive strabismus.

歡迎新成員加入香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系 – 任卓昇醫生

任卓昇醫生於2013年2月加入香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系為助理教授。任醫生在 2005年於香港大學醫學院畢業。其後在2010年取得香港大學公共衛生碩士, 並在2011年取得英國愛丁堡皇家外科醫學院院士。他在英國倫敦Great Ormond Street Hospital接受兒科眼疾專科訓練, 其後在美國巴爾的摩約翰霍普金斯大學接受David Guyton教授的斜視研究訓練, 以及在美國洛杉磯接受Kenneth Wright教授的眼科專科訓練。他曾於2009年在香港舉行科學年度大會會議上 榮獲最佳海報演示獎項。他亦擔任亞太兒科眼疾及斜視協會委員會成員。任醫生主要研究重點在於兒科眼疾及斜視的診斷和治療，包括先天性白內障，視網膜母細胞瘤，深近視，兒童眼前房紊亂、小兒及間歇性外斜視及牽制性斜視。

Professor Clement C.Y. Tham has been elected the new Secretary-General of Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO)

Prof Clement C.Y. Tham, the S.H. Ho Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences of CUHK, has been elected the new Secretary-General of Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) for a term of 4 years (2013 – 2017) at the recent 28th APAO Congress in India in January, 2013.

Established in 1960, the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) (www.apaophth.org) aims at advancing ophthalmic development in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Over 50 years of development, the organisation has become one of the largest supranational ophthalmic organisations, comprising 19 member countries and regions in the Asia-Pacific. In addition to organising the annual international congress to promote educational and scientific activities in ophthalmology and visual sciences, APAO also targets to foster cooperation between ophthalmological societies and institutes, both regionally and internationally. APAO launched its own official peer-reviewed scientific journal, the Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology (APJO), in 2012.

Before assuming the position of the Secretary-General of the APAO, Prof Tham was the Deputy Secretary-General of the organisation between 2010 and 2013. He was also the Chair of the APAO Congress Committee and the Scientific Program Committees of the 27th APAO Congress 2012 in Korea, and the 28th APAO Congress 2013 in India. Prof Tham was awarded the inaugural Nakajima Award by the APAO in 2005.

Prof Tham remarked, “I very much look forward to developing channels to allow young future leaders from Hong Kong and other APAO member nations to start contributing to APAO initiatives and committees at an earlier stage.”

譚智勇教授獲選為亞太眼科醫學會秘書長

譚智勇教授 - 現任香港中文大學何善衡眼科及視覺科學講座教授，剛於印度舉行的第二十八屆亞太眼科醫學會國際眼科會議上獲選為亞太眼科醫學會秘書長，任期為四年(2013年至2017年)。

亞太眼科學會(下稱“學會”)於1960年成立(www.apaophth.org)，致力推動亞太區的眼科發展。在過去的50 年，學會已經發展成為世界最大的國際眼科專科組織之一，成員包括在亞太地區內的19個國家和地區的眼科學會和機構。學會除了每年於成員國家或地區舉辦一年一度的國際眼科會議以推廣眼科及視覺科學的教育及科硏活動外，還會促進區內外各個眼科專科機構間之合作。學會更於2012年起定期出版由專家評審的論文雜誌 – 《亞太眼科雜誌》。

譚教授就任學會秘書長前，曾在2010年至2013年期間出任學會副秘書長一職。譚教授亦曾任2012年在韓國舉辦的第二十七屆亞太眼科醫學會國際眼科會議及2013年在印度舉辦的第二十八屆亞太眼科醫學會國際眼科會議的會議委員會及科學策劃委員會主席。早於 2005年，譚教授曾榮獲亞太眼科醫學會的首屆中島獎項。

譚教授表示：「我熱切期待將來有更多發展的渠道，讓來自香港和其他成員國家的年輕領袖早日為亞太眼科醫學會作出重大的貢獻。」

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) Open House 2013

To celebrate the start of the year 2013 and the inauguration of the Lee Wing Kit Advanced Ophthalmic Training and Education Centre (AOTEC), the Open House 2013 of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) was held on the 10th January 2013. The event was hosted by Prof Calvin Pang Chi-pui, the Department Chairman; Prof Clement Tham Thee-yung, Director, CUHK Eye Centre; Dr Cheung Kwong-Yu, Hospital Chief Executive, Hong Kong Eye Hospital; Dr Chi Chung-Chai, Deputy Hospital Chief Executive, Hong Kong Eye Hospital, and Dr Alvin Young Lerrmann, Chief of Service, DOVS, PWH and AHML Nethersole Hospital. Over 70 eye doctors from the HA’s Kowloon Central & New Territories East Clusters, and close associates of DOVS, joined the celebrations and ride on this occasion to have a personal touch of the new and latest facilities in AOTEC.

Prof Pang expressed his deepest gratitude to the late Mr Peter Ting Chang Lee, Mrs Nancy Lee and the Lee's family for their generous donation towards the establishment of AOTEC and emphasised that the establishment of AOTEC would definitely help the department accomplish its mission of helping Hong Kong to become the regional hub and centre of excellence in ophthalmic training and education in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Inaugurated on the 8th November 2012, AOTEC was named after the late Mr Lee Wing Kit in recognition of the support from the Lee's family to the University's development. The centre is located on the 4th floor of the Hong Kong Eye Hospital with area of approximately 1,100 sq. m.. It is equipped with state-of-the-art training and education facilities to provide necessary ophthalmic and visual sciences knowledge to both undergraduate medical students and post-graduate research students, as well as to offer basic training to ophthalmic residents. The new facilities in AOTEC include: Advanced Ophthalmic Investigation and Diagnosis Unit, Ocular Imaging Grading and Reading Centre, Ocular Pathology Training Centre, Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Centre, and Telemedicine Centre.

香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系開放參觀日2013

為慶祝2013年的來臨和利榮傑高等眼科培訓及教育中心的開幕，香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系於2013年1月10日舉行開放參觀日，並由學系主任彭智培教授、香港中文大學眼科中心總監譚智勇教授、香港眼科醫院行政總監張光宇醫生、香港眼科醫院行政副總監池中齊醫生，與及威爾斯親王醫院、大埔雅麗氏何妙齡那打素醫院眼科及視覺科學部門主管楊樂旼醫生共同主持祝賀儀式。逾70名來自醫院管理局九龍中醫院聯網及新界東醫院聯網醫生及與學系好友出席參觀。

彭智培教授衷心感謝利定昌先生伉儷及其家族慷慨資助成立中大利榮傑高等眼科培訓及教育中心，並強調中心的成立將有助香港發展成為亞太區內首屈一指的眼科培訓及教育中心，推動眼科臨床訓練及學術研究的持續發展。

利榮傑高等眼科培訓及教育中心於2012年11月8日開幕。中心位於香港眼科醫院四樓，佔地 1,100平方米，引進了不少先進的眼科設備，並以嶄新的概念推動眼科教學、科學研究及專科臨床培訓的發展。醫科本科學生、研究學生、在職見習醫生和眼科專科醫生可透過中心的高科技儀器和先進的實驗室設施，協助臨床診治和接受多元化的眼科教學和臨床醫療培訓。中心的重點設施包括：高等眼科病理及診斷、眼科影像掃描、評核及檢閱中心、眼科病理培訓中心、眼科顯微手術培訓中心及遠程醫學中心。

The CUHK Ophthalmology Forum 2012 cum HKEH 20^th Anniversary Symposium

More than 30 leading ophthalmologists and visual scientists around the world and from our CUHK Eye Centre lectured on, and discussed, key advancements in major eye diseases and research technologies. Research students presented their research projects for vigorous discussions. There were more than 100 participants from 17 cities in Japan, Korea, India, Singapore, Canada, the United States, and China.

The 8^th International Symposium of Ophthalmology – Hong Kong (The 8^th ISO-HK)

The 8th ISO-HK was held from December 14 to 16, 2012, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Organized by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK-DOVS) and led by the congress presidents, Prof Dennis Lam (former Chairman of DOVS) and Prof Calvin Pang (current Chairman of DOVS), the 8th ISO-HK was a great success. The 2.5-day congress attracted 780 submissions of abstracts and 1,340 delegates from 39 countries. More than 290 international speakers were invited to give talks in the congress.

The 8th ISO-HK was held in conjunction with the 7th Asia-Pacific Vitreo-Retina Society (APVRS) Congress, the Inaugural Congresses of the Asia-Pacific Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology Society (APSPOS) and the Asia-Pacific Society of Ocular Oncology and Pathology (APSOOP), the 10th Asia-Pacific Society of Eye Genetics (APSEG) Symposium, as well as the 24th Annual Scientific Meeting Hong Kong Ophthalmological Symposium, which is jointly organized by the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong (COHK) and the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society (HKOS).

第八屆香港國際眼科博覽會

由香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系籌辦，並由學系前系主任林順潮教授及現任系主任彭智培教授共同主持的第八屆香港國際眼科博覽會已於2012年12月14至16日於香港會議展覽中心順利舉行。兩天半的博覽會吸引了來自39個國家 ，1340名代表出席，並呈交了多達780篇論文摘要。此博覽會亦同時邀請了超過290名國際演講者於博覽會內發表演說。

第八屆香港國際眼科博覽會是與第七屆亞太玻璃體視網膜協會會議(APVRS)、亞太兒科眼疾及斜視協會(APSPOS)和亞太眼部腫瘤及病理學協會(APSOOP)之開幕會議、第十屆亞太眼基因協會會議(APSEG)，以及由香港眼科學院(COHK)和香港眼科學會(HKOS)籌辦之第二十四屆眼科週年硏討會同時舉行。

Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Centre (OMTC) Basic Microsurgical Workshop

Totally 8 resident doctors from Hong Kong Eye Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital have complted the Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Centre (OMTC)’s Basic Mirosurgical Workshop held in December 2012 organised by the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS).

As one of the key facilities of the Lee Wing Kit Advanced Ophthalmic Training and Education Centre (AOTEC) of DOVS, the OMTC provides state-of-the-art training environment and facilities for general ophthalmologists and ophthalmic trainees. Its aim is to develop surgical proficiency in those who are preparing for various surgical procedures, through lectures and video presentations, virtual reality simulations and wet lab sessions.

The objectives of the OMTC and its Workshops are:

1. Introduction of ophthalmic conditions which require surgical interventions
2. Step-wise learning of various ophthalmic procedures
3. Training of stereoscopic coordination and dexterity under surgical microscopes
4. Management of surgical complications
5. Accreditation of surgeons for ophthalmic surgeries on patients

Informative lecture series and video presentations provide groundwork for specific ophthalmic conditions and their treatment strategies. The OMTC houses the virtual reality system EYESi® Ophthalmosurgical Simulator, which employs advanced computer technology to give the surgeon the feeling that he is experiencing real intraocular surgery. In the wet lab sessions, participants engage in hands-on practice, supervised by course instructors. Step-by-step approach on important intraocular maneuvers on porcine eyes reinforces eye-hand-feet coordination and dexterity.

The coming “Phaco Workshop” will be held in April 2013.

眼科顯微手術培訓中心 – 基礎顯微外科手術工作坊

由香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系(下稱中大眼科)眼科顯微手術培訓中心舉辦的基礎眼科顯微外科手術工作坊，已於2012年12月參加並順利完成；期間共有8名香港眼科醫院及沙田威爾斯親王醫院的駐院醫生出席參與。

作為中大眼科利榮傑高等眼科培訓及教育中心的其中一項主要設施，眼科顯微手術培訓中心為眼科醫生及眼科學員提供最先進的設備和合適環境來體驗不同的眼科臨床手術。通過課堂、視頻演示及眼科虛擬手術訓練，讓正準備面對不同眼科手術之醫生和學員們提升手術的技巧和精確度。

工作坊之目標如下:

1. 介紹需要進行眼科外科手術的不同眼部情況
2. 分段學習各類型眼科手術
3. 使用手術顯微鏡作立體協調和靈巧度培訓
4. 學習手術併發症管理
5. 透過模擬練習成績，評審眼科醫生為眼科病人進行手術的水平

通過一系列富資訊性的課堂及視頻演示，令學員對各眼科疾病及治療方向有新的認識，並為他們打下基礎。培訓中心亦採用先進的虛擬訓練系統(EYESi)，結合先進的電腦技術，令學員仿似置身真正的內眼手術。學員亦會運用豬眼作實踐演練，並由課程導師監督，逐步提升學員手眼腳的協調和靈巧。

此外，超微創白內障切除手術工作坊將由於2013年4月舉行。

CUHK Lee Wing Kit Advanced Ophthalmic Training and Education Centre Opens Today
Equipped with State-of-the-art Ophthalmic Diagnostic Technologies and Training Facilities

The grand opening of the Lee Wing Kit Advanced Ophthalmic Training and Education Centre (AOTEC) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was held today (8 November). The Ceremony was hosted by Prof Pang Chi Pui Calvin, Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, CUHK, and Prof Tham Cheee Yung Clement, Director of CUHK Eye Centre. Officiating guests included Mrs Nancy Lee; Prof Sung Jao Yiu Joseph, Vice-Chancellor and President, CUHK and Prof Fok Tai Fai, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, CUHK; Dr Leung Pak Yin, Chief Executive, Hospital Authority, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Dr Hung Chi Tim, Cluster Chief Executive, Kowloon Central Cluster, Hospital Authority, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Dr Cheung Kwong Yu, Hospital Chief Executive, Hong Kong Eye Hospital; and Dr Dennis Lam, Honorary Professor of Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, CUHK. AOTEC was named after the late Mr Lee Wing Kit in recognition of the support from the Lee's family to the University's development. Over 130 distinguished guests and members of the University attended the ceremony.

配備最先進眼科診斷技術及培訓設施

香港中文大學(中大)今天(11月8日)舉行利榮傑高等眼科培訓及教育中心(中心)開幕典禮，典禮由眼科及視覺科學學系系主任彭智培教授及眼科中心總監譚智勇教授主持。主禮嘉賓包括利定昌夫人、中大校長沈祖堯教授、中大醫學院院長霍泰輝教授、醫院管理局行政總裁梁栢賢醫生、醫院管理局九龍中醫院聯網總監熊志添醫生、香港眼科醫院行政總監張光宇醫生，以及中大眼科及視覺科學學系名譽教授林順潮醫生。逾130名嘉賓及大學成員出席典禮，場面熱鬧。中心以利定昌先生之先嚴利榮傑先生尊諱命名，以答謝利先生伉儷的慷慨襄贊。中心的成立亦有賴香港特別行政區政府食物及衛生局、醫院管理局，以及大學教育資助委員會的支持。

The Chinese University of Hong Kong Laser Refractive Surgery Center is very proud to have won the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands Gold Award 2011 in the “Eye Surgery Center-Lasik” category. The award ceremony was held on May 24, 2011. Prof. Dennis S.C. Lam, Chairman of Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences (DOVS), Dr. Vishal Jhanji, Assistant Professor of DOVS, and Dr. Alex Fan, Assistant Professor DOVS, attended the ceremony to receive the award.

Press Conference: CUHK Discovers Sodium 4-phenylbutyrate as Potential New Glaucoma Drug

The press conference on the potential new glaucoma drug drew about 30 reporters from both broadcast and printed media. The speakers, who are also the investigators of the local research team, explained the scientic breakthrough throughoutly and vigoriously. The team extended the application of the chemical Sodium 4-phenylbutyrate to benefit glaucoma patients, while clinical bedside usage is expected to be carried out in 2 to 3 years.

Press Conference: CUHK & Shantou University Jointly Prove Acupuncture Improves Visual Outcomes in Treating Children's Lazy Eye

The press conference, which held on June 14, 2010, was well received by more than 30 reporters from both the local and international media institution. In the conference, the speakers illustrated children's lazy eye and how our study proves acupuncture improves visual outcomes. After the Q&A sessions, the Chief Acupuncturist of the study performed the treatment with several patients from the study group.

SFDA Clinical Trials Partnership Visit to Clinical Drug Trial Centers of Hong Kong Eye Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital

The China State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) visited Hong Kong Eye Hospital and Princes of Wales Hospital on March 27 2009 to review the clinical trials infrastructure development in the past 3 years since the clinical trial sites accreditation was obtained in 2006.

Following the morning visit to Princes of Wales Hospital, SFDA officials spent the afternoon at Hong Kong Eye Hospital and presentations were made by representatives from the HKEH/DOVS Clinical Drug Trial Center and the KE/KC Clinical Research Ethics Committee. The SFDA officials also reviewed clinical trials documents conducted in the Hong Kong Eye Hospital, as well as visited the clinical research and in-patient facilities of Hong Kong Eye Hospital.

The visit has been very successful and the SFDA officials were impressed by the quality of the research carried out by the ophthalmology departments at Princes of Wales Hospital and Hong Kong Eye Hospital. Although the SFDA officials did not schedule a formal assessment report at the end of the session, our centers were informed by them that the accreditation as GCP centre for SFDA registration trials is sustained.
