CUHK Eye Centre
|
|
With a view to integrating the academic sector with the public health care service, and meeting with the growing demand for ophthalmic services in Hong Kong, the CUHK Eye Centre (CUHKEC) (formerly known as the University Eye Centre, or UEC) was set up in the year of 1995 on the 3/F of HKEH building. Established under the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, CUHKEC has numerous missions, visions, and functions, including the provision of private clinical ophthalmic services through the CUHK-HKEH Private Eye Clinic.
In addition to the private clinic operation, CUHKEC also operates the CUHK Research Clinic. The CUHK Research Clinic conducts clinical ophthalmic research, including clinical drug trials and surgical trials involving laser refractive surgery, such as LASIK. We conduct upfront research on ophthalmic imaging and electrophysiology, utilising state-of-the-art equipment in optical confocal topographies and retinographies for clinical and experimental studies. We spearhead eye genetic services and eye genetic researches. We also take part in stem cells and integrated Chinese and Western Medicine researches as well. All these allow us to better understand early diagnosis and treatments of all major eye diseases.
A number of research facilities have been set up under CUHKEC with the objectives to strengthen research and education on detection and treatment of respective major eye diseases. These facilities include CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre, Pao So Kok Macular Disease Treatment and Research Centre, and Lim Por-yen Eye Genetics Research Centre.
The CUHK Research Clinic is also a Clinical Drug Trial Centre accredited by the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) of the People’s Republic of China since 2006. This is the only eye institute accredited by the CFDA in Hong Kong.

The CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre
|
|
Established in 1996, CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre is one of the major ophthalmic research and treatment centres based in CUHK Eye Centre under the supervision of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, CUHK. CUHK Laser Refractive Centre is the only one of its kind in Hong Kong that incorporates university-based scientific research, professional training and personalised clinical services into one all-inclusive refractive surgery centre.
CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre is committed to providing the best diagnostic and comprehensive refractive surgery services for patients. In addition to the clinical services, the CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre is devoted to academic research and professional training, which enable it to keep abreast of the latest technologies and developments in the field of refractive surgery.
At present, CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre provides a full spectrum of refractive surgery services, including LASIK by femtosecond technology (“All-laser” LASIK), LASIK by microkeratome, advanced surface ablation surgeries (LASEK and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK)), topography-guided refractive surgeries, phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) and collagen cross-linking surgery.
CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre has been awarded the Reader’s Digest “Trusted Brand“ in the Eye Surgery Centre (LASIK) category in Hong Kong for three (3) consecutive years since the launch of this awarding category in 2011. This is all the more meaningful since the award winner was chosen by the public who provides testimony to the Centre’s quality and service excellence.
With an eye to excellence in clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction, the CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre strives to utilise its research and development efforts effectively and efficiently to provide the best refractive surgery services to the public. In the future, the CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre will continue to excel in clinical services and research for the benefits of all patients in Hong Kong and beyond.
