The different laboratories conduct day-to-day functions in the Cancer Centre independently. However,
the HKCI provides the framework to foster inter-departmental collaborative activities including joint grant applications and publications. In 2002-3, members in the Centre were successful in obtaining a Central Allocation grant in Clinical applications of functional genomics in Hepatocellular Carcinoma; two Innovation and Technology Support grants Viral genomics of Hepatitis B virus based on HBV-infected individuals and Detection of aberrantly methylated DNA in blood and faeces as a screening test for digestive tract cancer. Furthermore, members in the Centre were chosen for support in the CUHK Strategic Research Grant entitled Asian Cancer Studies. The ongoing work supported by the Kadoorie Charitable Foundations and a Central Allocation grant for the Cooperative NPC Research Center continue to deliver high impact research output.
