About University Lecture on Civility
University Lecture on Civility invites outstanding speakers to share
their views with staff and students at CUHK, nurturing students
toward development of civic virtue and social engagement. We believe
the university is responsible in leading society toward advancement and
justice, so we hope to respond to the challenges of our society and
time through talks at University Lecture on Civility, initiating students
into thinking and going after their dreams.
In the past, we had invited Mr Lin Hwai-min, founder of Cloud Gate
Dance Theatre of Taiwan, to give a talk on ‘Planting Flowers on a
Concrete Floor’; Professor Leo Ou-fan Lee on ‘The Nobility of Failure’;
Professor Kenneth Hsien-yung Pai on ‘The Resilience of Youth’; Ms
Hu Shuli from mainland China on the ideals of a journalist; as well
as acclaimed Taiwanese architect Mr Kris Yao on ‘Making A Thatched
Cottage Amongst the Throng of Men’.
University Lecture on Civility also organises horizon-broadening cultural
events. In 2012 and 2015, we organised the I·CARE Floral Festival,
featuring cultural performances that blended poetry recitation and
music. In 2013, as CUHK celebrated its 50th anniversary, we organised
various activities themed ‘Hello CU Hello Future’, including a hike within
the campus and a concert exclusive for CUHKers. At the I·CARE Book
Festival in 2012 and 2013, we invited alumni to bring books back to the
university to share their treasured collections with the next generation
of CUHKers. In 2014, we organised a three-week-long film festival,
playing a number of films that centred around themes like personal
growth, education, ambition, contention and death, as well as hosting a
series of post-film forums.
