Scholarships and Financial Aid

The United College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong offers a wide variety of scholarships and financial aid to our students. These scholarships aim to promote and foster ethical, intellectual, physical, social and aesthetic development in students as well as to help them in financial matters. In the 2015-2016 academic year, the total amount of College scholarships, awards and financial aid offered by the College is in the region of HK$10 million, with over 2,700 awards.

1. Admission Scholarships in 2015

1.1 Academic Admission Scholarships

(a) United College offers admission scholarships to new students through the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, CUHK. The details of the admission scholarships are as follows:

(b) United College also offers admission scholarships to students from Mainland China with outstanding academic performance. Over the past ten years, 194 mainland students were awarded admission scholarships at HK$500,000 each.

1.2 Other Admission Scholarships

All new students are welcome to apply for the following admission scholarships. Application details will be announced later.

(a) United College Whole-person Education Admission Scholarships Scheme

In order to encourage students with different talents and expertise to pursue studies in United College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, United College has established "United College Whole-person Education Admission Scholarships Scheme", awards which include the following:

  • Sports Admission Scholarship
    Sports Admission Scholarship was established to give recognition to year-one students who have achieved high standards in the performance of sports activities as well as to encourage them to further develop these potentials at the United College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The Scholarship, in the amount of HK$10,000, is renewable provided that the awardee meets the renewal requirements.
  • Dr Thomas Chen Si Yuan Social Service Admission Scholarships
    Dr Thomas Chen Si Yuan Social Service Admission Scholarships were established to give recognition to year-one students who have made outstanding contributions in social services whilst in high school and to encourage them to join the United College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. There are three awards, in the amount of HK$10,000 each. The Scholarships are renewable provided that the awardees meet the renewal requirements.
  • Innovation and Culture Admission Scholarships
    The Innovation and Culture Admission Scholarships were established to recognise year-one students of United College who have shown talents and capacity for creativity in the arts and culture as well as to encourage them to further develop these potentials at the United College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. There are two awards, in the amount of HK$10,000 each.

(b) Digital Heritage Elite Athlete Scholarships

The Digital Heritage Elite Athlete Scholarships were established to provide opportunities for present and retired elite athletes who have made significant contributions to the sports world to study in the United College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong while at the same time helping to promote sports participation and health awareness in the College. There are one to two awards, ranging from HK$30,000 to HK$60,000 each. The Scholarships are renewable provided that the awardees meet the renewal requirements.

(c) First-in-the-Family Tertiary Education Admission Scholarships

To encourage students of United College who are the first generation in the family to pursue tertiary education at United College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the College has established "First-in-the-Family Tertiary Education Admission Scholarship" at HK$2,500 each.

2 Residence Grants

2.1 Hostel Residence Grant

The Hostel Residence Grant Scheme provides financial support to needy students to enable them to have a residential College life of advancement in academic performance and for better participation in various activities on campus. This Scheme is supported by various donors.

Application and Amount:
Applicants being provided a hostel place (including hostels of College, I-house and the teaching hospital) on the University campus are eligible to receive support. A maximum of 2 awards may be allocated for 2 academic terms in one year. The award amount for 2015-2016 will be announced in September 2015 (maximum for 2014-2015: HK$1,300 x 2 terms = HK$2,600).

Application Period: September 2015

2.2 Off-campus Residence Grant

The Grant Scheme provides financial support to needy students who have not been assigned a hostel place on campus, to rent a place off-campus closer to the University compared with the family. It aims at facilitating the students to participate in College activities and striving excellence in study.

Criteria and amount of the Grant are as follows:

  • The upper limit of Grant for 2015-2016 is HK$5,200(Maximum HK$520 x 10 months starting from September of each academic year).
  • Area of rented flats extends to Shatin, Ma On Shan, Tai Po and North District
