Dean of General Education’s Message

College General Education is an essential aspect of CUHK education. We, at Wu Yee Sun College, offer a unique educational programme that complements holistically the academic requirements of the major, minor, and university core curricula. The design of our programme puts into action the mission of Wu Yee Sun College: entrepreneurial spirit with social responsibility. Our aim is to produce students who are capable of making good use of their scholarship to enhance their personal achievement, and also to benefit our society at large. Sensitivity to social injustice and exposure to social-political and economic problems will prepare our students for a life-long commitment to social betterment, regardless of the professional career they choose to follow.

Every Wu Yee Sun student is required to complete six units of College General Education, specifically the courses 'Entrepreneurial Spirit and Social Responsibility' (a three-unit course for Year 1 students) and 'College Senior Seminar' (a three-unit course for Year 4 students).

'Entrepreneurial Spirit and Social Responsibility' consists of four components. First, the course challenges students to reflect on the role of students in the university, of the university in society, and their respective social responsibilities; the meaning of university liberal education, and the conceptions of social justice. Second, it introduces students to the wide range of social and environmental issues that we face today. These issues are frequently overlooked by observers, as the world is too often overwhelmed by technological advances. Third, the course discusses the economic value of innovations and the exciting prospects of creating new social ventures that promote humanity and social progress in the context of a market economy.  Fourth, the course draws insights from the psychology of thinking and creativity. An understanding of human cognitive processes would empower students with a useful know-how to think critically, to create, and to innovate.

'College Senior Seminar' requires students to form small teams to work on a project under the supervision of a faculty member. Students are guided to design and plan innovative social ventures that promise to bring social benefits to the community. Each team has to deliver a report, and peer students would respond with comments on its merits, feasibility, and sustainability.

Apart from the two credit-bearing courses, Wu Yee Sun College offers non-credit bearing College assemblies, high-table dinners, and regular guest lectures. Our students are therefore engaged, throughout their four years, in a continuous educational process consistent with our mission. We strive to provide an educational infrastructure and to foster a culture so that our students can learn in a free, inspiring, and enjoyable environment.
