Following the success of a previous lecture series on Waterloo Road,
the series continued with an exploration of the historical legacy of Castle Peak Road. The topics of the lectures varied from business families who were once active on Castle Peak Road,
to the history of a famous school.
The lives of the residents and the development of hospitals along the road were discussed.
The first lecture was titled “ Hills Stay Green”.
The lecture series was opened by Prof. Kwok-kin Siu, who examined history of Castle Peak Road and the culture of the people who lived along it.
Prof. Wing-kin Puk introduced a famous Hong Kong businessman LEE Iu Cheung and his Hong Kong Dragon Garden,
which is now a historical building.
Mr Chi-ming Shun told us the story of the internment of the former director of the Hong Kong Observatory,
Graham Heywood, at the Sham Shui Po Prisoner-of-War Camp.
The second lecture illustrated the lives of three entrepreneurs who established businesses on Castle Peak Road.
Prof Siu-lun Wong introduced the Hong Kong industrialist Tse-kai Ann,
who was chosen by both the Chinese and British governments to serve as a bridge between the two societies;
Dr Yuk-sik Chong showed us the innovative commercial model invented Dr CHOU Wen Hsien and how he affected the lives of Hong Kong people;
Dr Lee-man Choy elaborated on the ups and downs of the famous Hong Kong brand Garden Bread and its founder T. F. CHEUNG.
The third lecture was about the development of residential areas along Castle Peak Road.
Mr Koon-yiu Ma used the Sheung Li Uk Estate to elaborate on Hong Kong’s Postwar Pilot Housing Scheme for low-Income families;
Dr Man-kong Chow explained the contributions of the Ho Iu Kwong Family to the construction of public housing in Shek Kip Mei and to the Hong Kong construction industry;
Dr Ching Hui unfolded the relationship between IP Man and the Lei Cheng Uk Resettlement Estate.
The last lecture was themed “Rooted in Unease”.
Prof. Shuyong Liu laid out the development of Ta Teh Institute,
a unique institute of higher learning in the history of Hong Kong; Dr Joseph S. P. Ting discussed the indigenous congregation of the Sisters of the Precious Blood and their work in Sham Shui Po;
Dr Victor Zheng recounted the story of Albert Ahwee, the founder of Kowloon Dairy.
A total of around 600 people attended the lecture series. ■
