Dear Members and Friends,
Welcome to the sixth issue of the Policy Research @ HKIAPS e-Newsletter. I hope that this newsletter will keep you updated on our efforts and plans to facilitate academic exchanges and build social impacts from policy research.
The Chinese Government announced its National 14th Five-Year Plan in March 2020. The plan establishes a clear position on the role of Hong Kong and its future development from the political, economic, and social perspectives. The 14th Five-Year Plan will have a huge impact on Hong Kong in various different aspects. To develop policy discussions with stakeholders and the public, Policy Research @ HKIAPS launched a new webinar series on the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), called the “Bay Area Experience: Evidence-based Policy Webinar Series”, co-sponsored by the CUHK Global China Research Programme.
The focus of this Series is on the strategic development of the GBA. Research in this area will involve a long-term focus on pressing issues in multiple fields as noted in the country’s development blueprint. The first webinar of this series, entitled
“Research and Innovation Outlook in the Greater Bay Area”, was held in December 2021. Several monthly webinars have been planned through July 2022. The webinars will cover topics in diverse areas as education, business, urban planning, and law.
Over the past two years, the whole world has been shaken by the outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Since the start of the pandemic, studies have been conducted from different perspectives to examine how to fight the pandemic, for example, from the perspective of public health, technology, or medicine. Besides the COVID-19 Webinar Series that we launched last year to better understand the public response to COVID-19, we issued the latest Policy Research Report No. 4 –
On the Road to Combat the Pandemic: Hong Kong Citizens’ Views on the Impact of and Responses to COVID-19. This study analysed public opinion and responses to the measures related to the pandemic, which provide policy directions for policymakers.
In the coming month, we will continue to encourage CUHK researchers to participate and contribute to the policy pathway that strengthens our research impact on Hong Kong and beyond.
As Convenor, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new members who are joining this vibrant platform to build our policy impact on society. I hope to see you at our upcoming events and to work together on interdisciplinary scholarly exchanges in the future!
