To understand development trends in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area, as well as scenarios for related research, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and CUHK held a joint symposium to enhance the public’s understanding of the subject and to establish a platform for the exchange of views between scholars from mainland China and Hong Kong.
To open the symposium, Prof. Fanny M. Cheung and Prof. Fang Cai delivered the welcome messages. Two keynote speeches were delivered by Mr Andy S. F. Chan and Prof. Fang Cai. Mr Chan spoke on the role of Hong Kong in the economic development of the BRI and the Bay Area. Prof. Cai examined the logic behind China’s efforts to further open the area for development.
The symposium consisted of four thematic discussion sessions, which attracted nearly 100 attendees. These sessions, which engaged 12 panellists, were aimed at facilitating academic exchanges. The panellists participated in frank and critical discussions on various topics and made key suggestions on specific aspects related to the BRI and the Bay Area, including strategy coordination, open development, policy directions, and system innovations.
