Policy Research @ HKIAPS launched the last of the Bay Area Experience Webinar Series on 26 August 2022, with the topic “Physical Activity and Health of Children and Parents: Big Data Generated from the Greater Bay Area”. In this webinar, Prof. Amy Sau-Ching Ha presented how the Fun to Move@JC project (project) can help to increase children’s physical activity. Two discussants, Prof. Yi-jian Yang highlighted the potential of the project, and Ms Sze-wing Man shared her experience as a witness and participant in this project.
Prof. Ha pointed out the significance of physical activity and how it is lacking among Hong Kong's children, a situation that has worsened with the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, Prof. Ha and her colleagues developed the Fun to Move@JC project.
The project, which began in 2017, is a school-based project funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. It is designed to increase the physical activity of children by enhancing home-school cooperation and utilizing information technology, namely through the use of a wrist-worn sports band, mobile applications, and big data analysis. Online physical education classes were also implemented during the pandemic. After introducing the project, Prof. Ha presented research findings on the project and provided policy recommendations for the Greater Bay Area (GBA).
Prof. Yang discussed the importance of engaging in suitable physical activity across our lifespan. Physical inactivity could lead to serious consequences, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, loss of bone density, and other problems. Prof. Yang then highlighted Prof. Ha’s project features and explained how her project can be applied in other GBA cities.
A primary school principal, Ms Man expressed her experience as a witness and participant of the Fun to Move@JC project. She agreed that the project can provide students, parents, and teachers with tools and ideas for building an active, healthy lifestyle. She further explained that ample financial and human resources support could contribute to the success of the project.
About 46 local and regional participants attended the webinar.
